Anyone have a sp 100? Ive been using one on a miller 180 and have been less than thrilled with it. I get a lot of those pops as soon as you start the arc and the wire burns back into the tip. This causes the wire to bind up into the gun and the gin must be taken apart to access the rollers. Ive been using .030 wire and argon at 20. When i have gotten a good run going , i can't get good penetration. Advice?
Reply:I assume with argon you are welding alum?If so, that is part of the game. Clip the wire every start. Push the bead, and use 5356 wire if possible. Your ground circuit must be very good.Your 180 does not have run-in start feature like the more expensive machines like the 252. What the run-in feature does is feed your wire slow so it does not bash the metal and pop. When it does hit the metal it senses the circuit it starts the arc and speeds up the wire so that you have your start and now can run the weld. After clipping the wire try starting at more of an angle then tip it up when you start to push. Do it fast.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Ive been using my MM 211 and spoolmate 100. Only once have I had a burn back which required the extensive disassembly of the spoolmate 100. Ive only been using .035 4043 with the appropriate sized tips. Ive purchased 5356 but havent used it as it is not listed on the inside cover of the MM 211. Clean Aluminum and as stated above PUSH ONLY. I think the .035 vs. the .030 may be the difference in reducing burn back and increasing the penetration.Everlast PowerPro 256, Everlast W300 Cooler, Everlast Cart 250Millermatic 211, Spoolgun 100, Miller HD CartJackson W60 Truesight Digital Auto Darkening, Victor 315 Torch sitting on a Harper 830-86 cart
Reply:The smaller machines (MM 140-211) are designed for 4043 use. I don't think they have the voltage required to spray 5356. It wasn't in the literature when I bought mine and was kinda p!ssed finding out afterward. Miller didn't disclose it until in lit specs until several months later. As Shovelon said clip your wire before each start or restart. To eliminate burn backs start with higher than suggested WFS and dial it back from there . Also be mindful of the SM 100's duty cycle; its kinda weak and the only alternative is an SGA-100 and the SM 3035 according to my email from Miller. I had to Jerry- rig mine after loosing proper gas coverage. The poly tube that runs the length of the whip came undone from where it meets at the base of the gun from the brass hose barb. Easy fix; but avoidable.Last edited by Softwireman78; 06-22-2013 at 01:16 PM.Late to bed, and early to rise. Fish like hell so I don't have to make up lies. Syncrowave 200MM211 & Spoolmate 100
Reply:Did I miss read that? do you have a SP100 and a spoolmate 180 or the opposite?I don't think an SP100 (lincoln) has the power to do a spool gun. If it did you would have to go a small as possible on the wire. Crank the speed to max, always cut your wire before starting, and you might get away with it if the aluminum is preheated, but it's going to be pushing your luck. The SP100 manual doesn't even mention aluminum options. You have to get into spray arc heats. If it's a Miller 180, then I am wrong, do what Shovelon said. I just set up a Miller challenger with a spoolgun but I had to add a contactor kit to it.Last edited by blackbart; 06-22-2013 at 04:20 PM.
Reply:In regards to the mess after a burn back. Just remove the clear side cover access door covering the drive rolls, press the red lever on top to open up the drive rolls, and use a small flathead screwdriver to clear the mess out. Open the canister and rethread the wire. There's no need to take the spool gun itself apart.Late to bed, and early to rise. Fish like hell so I don't have to make up lies. Reply:Thanks for all the advice. Clipping the wire before every start should help. I didn't know that the plastic side plate came off , if so that will help too. Ive been welding a long time but have very little spool gun experience. I will be back in my shop some on sunday and try it again. As always , thanks! |
