i recently scored this punch off ebay for 187.00. it is a whitney no.40 punch with the capacity to punch holes 5/8" into 5/8" thich carbon steel. it came with a 1/4" punch and die. while trying to get extra punch and dies i tried to contact w.a.whitney and roper whitney but they both refered to each other. all im trying to get is a 3/8", 1/2", 9/16", 5/8" punch and die sets. does anyone know as to whom i can get these from or made, or might anyone have some for this machine that i can buy off you if you do not need them would greatly be helpfull. it is an older machine works well and hand operated. Thanks for readingDavid Sanders Attached Images
Reply:Nice score.  I have never seen a Model 40.  I have a 20.  Paid about 300 buck for it about 5 yrs ago off ebay.  www.roperwhitney.com.  Is that who you tried?Dies sets are reasonable.  Delivery might take a while.  I ordere dies through them a couple of years ago.Make sure the nut holder is the same for each punch you desire.    Here is my experience with fabricating my own punch and die.  The punch/die still works well.  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...+roper+whitney
Reply:yes i emailed roper whitney first and they told me it was discontinued. then they refered me to w.a. whitney when they refered me back to roper whitney. i emailed w.a.whitney back with a pick of the punch and dies and they responded today a while ago with that they might be able to help i just need to send them the measurements. now since the machine is at my house and im floating out off the coast on this grey hunk of metal its going to have to wait and then im not going to be for sure if they can help. i dont want to think i wasted money on a overkill 1/4" punch. hopefully if they cant help i can find someone to make the tooling i need for it.

Reply:A number 40 is a Roper Whitney, I believe.Anyway, the punch and die should be available from a variety of sources.Cleveland Punch and Die, for example, calls your size a C-740, and they make them in round holes from 1/8" up to 1 1/2".http://www.clevelandpunch.com/I have a no. 20, and I have gotten punches and dies from them for it. I use them to buy the punches for my ironworker, as well, quality stuff, reasonably priced. Probably cost you about $40 to $50 per hole size for punches and dies for this- not cheap, but they should last a long time.Unfortunately, there were a LOT more model 20's made than model 40's, and they take a different size punch and die, so finding em used, while possible, is gonna be tough.

Reply:You could use this tool as a flypress or crimper or embosser.  Just remembered this tread, I made a flat die and used my whitney 20 ton to flatten some 1/2" tubing.
