I bought some Milwaukee steel hole saws to notch some tubing for my bike frame. At first they seemed to work good cutting through the steel tubing. For some reason the 1 3/8 hole saw was turning very off. It was brand new , never used before. I used the 1 11/16 " hole saw and it seemed to be cutting decent enough to size. I might try and round it out on the lathe by pushing some aluminum against it. Anyone have any good things to say about using hole saws for notching steel tubing? I know the best way would be with the notch grinder.
Reply:Don't know if this is so in your case, but if it hangs up in some situations it usually bends the pilot drill. If the same bit runs true w/ other saws, then that saw must be tweaked. Milwaukee is usually good quality, however I haven't bought any for several yrs so maybe their's are coming from china. Reply:Pilot could be bent or the saw itself will go out of round if it hangs up. My solution was to take out the pilot and braze 1" dia 1" long bar stock over old pilot hole. Chuck saw on top (solid section with teeth pointing away from tailstock) and cut new shank concentric with saw. I cut some 1/2" beacuse that is largest size my chuck will accept. Cut others 3/4" to use in collet. Yes size matters, larger is stronger and less prone to chatter and hang-ups.Peter

Reply:You should be using the drive pins, even if the saw wobbles a slight amount. I spin the drum fully onto the pilot arbor and back it off until the pins line up. When you run the drum all the way tight onto the pilot assembly and make a hole, it torques the drum far too much into place and can ruin the whole tool. The only time I don't use the pins is with the very small sizes that don't accept drive pins at all.City of L.A.
