ok ive been looking for a bigger welder for some time.and i had to face facts im broke lol. well after lookin on the net i found this http://www.instructables.com/id/SpoolGun/ som guy hooked up a spool gun to some car batts and walla he has a welder. and this got me thinking why couldnt i do the same but use my old lincoln stick for my power supply.my first thought was hell ya this would work. then i thought well u have no idea about electric so i come to you guys to see what what u think.
Reply:So to me, it seems like you want a MIG and all you have is a stick.  The basic fundamental difference between the two is stick (SMAW) utilizes a CC (constant current) powersupply and MIG (GMAW) CV (constant voltage) power source.  You can give MIG a shot using the CC power source, it does somewhat work, and given that you stick machine is an "old Lincoln", its probably an AC power source as well, which complicates things even more.  What your going to find is using the old Lincoln will yield an unstable arc that is prone to big changes cause by the slightest change in wire stickout.  The AC will also be more prone to porosity.  MIG with a CC, AC power source has been done, and is used for somestuff, what, I don't really know.  I use a CC, DC power source for welding thin gauge steel and stainless with great success.  If you can master that though, CV, DC mig would be a breeze. Now, something a little more encouraging.  With structural welding going to wire welding, there has been alot of success using CC powersources with self-shielded flux core wires (FCAW).  I've used it a little bit just to play around, but my engine drive is both a CC and CV, and can run AC, DC+, and DC- power source, so it doesn't make sense for me, but it may work well for you.  Then you don't have to worry about gas too.Just one last thing though, for the price of a decent spool gun, you can big up a red or blue 180 and actually MIG with CV.Hope this helps, if you decide to go for it, let me know how it goes, maybe I can help.
Reply:thanks guys . that was the info i was looking for and yes im wanting a bigger mig i have my stick welder(lincoln 225) and a 110 hobart. but i think im just going to save up for what i really want. and that is a hobart 210 handler.
