Is there a tungsten sharpener out there that works like a pencil sharpener??Right now at work we're just using the 'ole tungsten-in-a-drill then sharpen on a big sanding disk technique.'Boss is looking into finally getting a dedicated tungsten sharpener with diamond wheel.But... I'm surprised there's no super string carbide bit type sharpeners that operate like a simple pencil sharpener.eg: You turn it on, stick it in a whole, and some angled bits sharpen your tungsten for you.Is there anything out there like that??"A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
Reply:Not that I know of but it sounds like a good idea....but I would not use one anyway....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:This is the closest thing to a pencil sharpener that I could find. It's a bit expensive but it works well. I have been using the III version every day for 3 years. You still have to rotate the tungsten yourself. http://www.diamondground.com/tungste...rode-grinders/Last edited by atari; 07-13-2013 at 10:46 PM.(Home)Miller Maxstar 152 (sold)MM211/spool gunLincoln AC 225C(Work)Dynasty 350Powcon 300STLincoln SP-175TWeldlodgic AWS150sWeldlodgic AWS300Custom Resistance seam weldersCambridge Vacuum EB weldersI smell something burning.
Reply:We use a double ended grinder bench (or whatever it's real name is)... works just fine. It's quick and impossible to **** up, unless you can't spin the tungsten evenly across the side of the wheel.

Reply:We use a piranha III at work. It works great, is pricey though. They'd freak if we used a belt sander

Reply:You can also sharpen your tungsten chemically as shown in the video link below. I have a bottle of the chemical and, although I seldom sharpen that way, it does work very well. The instructions on my bottle tell you to change to DC+ and do an arc on a piece of copper to heat the tip. A propane torch would work also as shown in the video. If you do this correctly, it does give a very nice point. I was able to get my tungsten very sharp, even sharper than the video shows. I don't think he put the tungsten into the chemical far enough. Just an idea .[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSSaJ-Ke7as[/ame]Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:^^ Yah I looked at that chemical stuff a few months back.  Seems like a LOT of time to do something which can be done in 1/4th the time on a grinder.  Plus, when you have 4 or 5 tungstens on the go, it's just easier to grind them using drill & grinder.I'll have to take apart an electric pencil sharpener and see if there's some way to replace the steel blades in them with either a high-carbon tool steel, or abrasive.  It would have to be engineered by someone though.Hmph.. 'think I'll patent it  "A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."

Reply:Unless its a HIGH END job that needs perfect welds I use the cordless drill and belt sander method, I have a hand held tungsten grinder and it works good for those jobs..  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:You might be interested in this sharpener I made a while back.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=59044 I have drilled new holes to do 1/16" and 1/8"  at 10 and 15 degrees since and am still using the first diamond wheel I put on it.

Reply:Fingers and the disc sander here, sometimes the bench grinder. Can someone explain why  to use the special diamond sharpener? I know about the thoriated and radioactive dust, but other than that, what's the big deal?Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
