HelloCould someone clarify this for me..What is necessary if a client wants to qualify the weld to AS1554.1 when one of the tube ends is crimped as shown in the photos attached. I am a little confused as the is no reference to this sort of situation in the code. The deformed tube end (crimped) would now be non standard i guess so not sure how this can be qualified.Any suggestions would be most appreciated.Regards  C. Attached Images
Reply:AS1554.1 parallels AWS D1.1 pretty closely. You could combine to PQRs together and reference on the WPS. In my case I can and would purchase both fillet plate and fillet pipe pre-qualified SWPS from AWS. I would reference them both on my modified WPS using them as supplemental documentation and I should be good to go. Does your governing body offer any SWPS?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Hi ShovelonThank you for your reply, I will look into SWPS possibilities. For AWS approx how much would these two SWPS cost?Regards. C
Reply:I don't know a lot about structural codes but it would seem that flattening the tube is kind of a redneck/lazy way to be doing something that has to meet a specific welding code. Is the pipe galvanized before welding as well? I think you could be defeating the whole purpose of having a code when you're building something that doesn't make the strongest joint possible, ie/ coping the pipe to fit.

Reply:All good.. AS1554.1 I found actually has a section on flattened circular hollow sections so no problem. Will be used for fencing apparently on a very expensive O&G project... lol... fencing around somewhere remote i guess..! Thanks all.Regards. C
Reply:Originally Posted by NicheFabNo offense taken, but just to clarify, redneck does not equal stupid or lazy. Actually there are a lot of rednecks out there that have become quite proficient making chicken salad out of chicken $h1t. Just pointing out a generalization and noting that some of us are below the Mason Dixon line, speak with a southern draw, like mucking around in the woods; I guess considered a redneck to some degree.I agree about the pipe crimping vs coping though.. excluding a few exception situations where only the animals are going to see it..-Niche
Reply:Originally Posted by Welder DaveI didn't say stupid. Redneck can imply a less sophisticated way of getting something done. It is easier to flatten the pipe than to cope it. It doesn't have quite as much strength but will work for the application. Doing something that is easier rather than taking a little more time to do it the best way is a form of lazy is it not? Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with doing it an easier and/or faster way.
