Reply:The first thing I would do is find out how much actylene it requires and how much your cylinder can supply. As long as you do not over draw the cylinder you light and set to a neutral flame the same as you would a cutting or brazing flame.

Reply:I've just stepped into this arena as well.  I've had my o/a rig for a couple years now.  I've done a bit of cutting with it (minimal), but mostly, I've used it for heating.  I've just used the cutting torch, and have had to be patient with it.  A couple of days ago, I went to my LWS, and talked to my sales guy about heating tips.  He asked what size cylinder I had, and I errantly told him it was only an 80 (75).  He said I'd only be able to run a #4 tip, with my heavy duty setup, and such a small cylinder.  $114 for the heating tip...yikes!  W ent back to the shop, and realized my cylinder is actually a 140, so I imagine I can run a bigger rose bud.  I'd like to find a chart that shows what size rosebuds can be used with certain bottle sizes.Subscribed!-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:Find a tip chart for your brand.  Note the CFH required for Acetylene and use the 1/7 or 1/10th rule."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:There's a good video of Jody (weldingtipsandtricks) on you tube demonstrating how to use a rose bud.Good luck and hope you don't blow yourself up !
Reply:Just to put some data in the thread:  According to the Victor booklet, an acetylene rosebud in #4 size uses 6-20 cu-ft/hr (@6-10 PSIG).   At a minimum setting and using 6 cu-ft/hr, the 1/7th rule says you need a  42 cu-ft tank at the minimum setting.   At maximum setting, you need a 140 cu-ft tank.A Victor #6 rosebud is 14-40 cu-ft/hr, so you need a 100 to 280 cu ft tank (or multiple tanks with a manifold).Besides being cheaper, propane is not limited by a 1/7th rule although there are limits due to cooling the tank, it's not like acetylene.
Reply:Ok so according to what i hear you all saying in order to run my #8 rosebud tip I require 30-80 cfh in acetylene and 33-88 cfh in oxygen. Which means i need a 210-560 cf acetylene tank and a 231-616 cf oxygen tank so my 75cf acetylene and 125cf oxygen tanks are no where near big enough. If this is right does anyone wanna buy a #8 victor rosebud?2 invision 456 mp, 456 pheonix, 3 hypertherm 1250, Hypertherm 45,Dynasty 200dx, Millermatic 210 w/ spoolgun, Bobcat 250, 12vs extreme, slugger dry cut saw, slugger mag drill, O/A rig, Piles of tools
Reply:You can use any size oxy tank, it's only the acetylene that is limited by size. Your numbers are right, you need a big tank to run a #8.
Reply:What about with the cutting torch? Is the tip the determining factor or is it the torch body?2 invision 456 mp, 456 pheonix, 3 hypertherm 1250, Hypertherm 45,Dynasty 200dx, Millermatic 210 w/ spoolgun, Bobcat 250, 12vs extreme, slugger dry cut saw, slugger mag drill, O/A rig, Piles of tools

Reply:Lets make this easyYou probably have the regular small tanks like everyone else.  Something like 140cf Acetylene, 125-250 O2.Set your regulator on the Acetylene to 10psi.  Set the Oxygen regulator to around 10-15psi.Turn on the Acetylene at the torch, and light it.  Increase the flow at the torch till the smoke starts to go away, then turn on the oxygen at the torch.  Adjust the oxygen until you see individual fingers coming from the torch, not a big blue flame.  The cone will start to shrink back to the fingers.  Then you're good to go.As you use the torch, the flame will start to change as the withdrawl rate changes.  Acetylene will not flow at the initial rate after the rig heats up.  The rate will start to diminish.  The useable flame will start to get smaller......compensate.Another thing is cooling.............  Aside from trying to maintain a large flow of gas........KEEP THE TORCH AWAY FROM CLOSED IN ANGLES ETC.  IT WILL GET HOT IF YOU JAMB IT IN TOO CLOSE.  I believe Sir Lansealot had this problem  Poor lil' guy was skeered by the pop.  Shoulda been too, without flash arrestors it could make for a bad day. When you hear it start to whistle, or it pops and quits, it's time to make sure you aren't too close to the steel.  The torch has to cool.  It's the other bear in the woods, aside from flow.Play with the rig, and see what causes problems, then adjust stuff.  It's the way to learn."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:We rent about a 200 CF Acetylene tank, and it's still too small to cut 24" thick plate.  "USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
