Reply:If you had a Dynasty, you could still "weld like a pro" but you just couldn't blame it on the machineXMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.

Reply:And that's about the right tool for a "professional"I'll take a skilled tradesman any day, all day, every day, thank you very much.. Professional is one of those words that display human frailty and insecurity all lit up in neon lights.Properly it means one who has professed to some higher calling and  it means not one single thing more.So it has nothing to do with earning income doing a thing well or any level of competence or how one dresses or behaves.  All those things have been bastardized onto the word  by people who are either  overly influenced by those around them  or semi illiterate or desperately insecure and seeking to use fancy sounding language because the thing they identify  with (their job)  doesn't have that panache that je ne sais quoi that Ohhh La La.  They think  that whatever it is lacks sufficient dignity so they reach for something fancier sounding. It all started in the 1960s with Howard Cosell calling every  muscular, well coordinated, ignorant bozo who could  move a ball  between two points a PROFESSIONAL. And  that was conveniently coupled with the  pandemic insecurity fostered by America's very first mass - almost whole generational - influx of first in the family's histories college  graduates.  Yes parents were proud as punch. But the kids  came home  and wore white shirts, had titles and better pay than their dads and they didn't get dirt on their hands or under their fingernails. And at get togethers they were always introduced by their newly minted job titles.I remember all this because I lived it.  In college I studed it.And within a very short time everybody who used their hands to do a thing from typing to carrying to hauling  to bricklaying to hammering was calling themselves by some pretentious fancy title  such as  maintenance engineer or administrative assistant. The old words were  just not good enough any more.Everybody wanted a pretentious title and people stopped identifying as Father, husband, Mother wife  they started thinking of themselves as being identified by what it was they did for money.  How sad. But  what one does for a living is  just a vocation, or if  one went to school to learn it, it is an avocation. So engineers accounts welders  you name practice avocations of one sort of other. They are not professionals. They are avocational experts and tradesmen.A professional is a monk a nun  a priest or a shaman - - Find anything else that really and truly qualifies as a higher calling and I'll think on it. Lawyer  Physician? Are they professionals? Am I?  I think not.  I say they are not, because they are just humans engaged in high level navel gazing, for profit - - especially for profit.  There is nothing higher about what we do. It's all about humans taking  care of other humans and making a buck in the deal. I think that if you earn a dollar at it  then it can not possibly be that higher calling.  In my not very humble opinion only a very narrowly defined class of persons can properly use the term professional: Monks in isolation eschewing worldly  things like money and Nuns who live lives of sacrifice and dedication.  The rest of us are all just putting on airs when we use such terms. I was a machinist toolmaker and damn proud of it.My mechanic is a skilled tradesman and I wouldn't let any one else but a skilled tradesman touch my front end, brakes, or engine. OK, OK,  I'll put the soap box aside. Sorry for the outburst. I'll stand in the corner now for a whileplease don't beat me sir.Hey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!

Reply:My understanding has always been this; a professional earns a living  for his/her work, an amateur does it for fun (and occasionally a little profit). I guess a combination of the two would be a lucky person.http://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484
Reply:@ Raul - Points well received and acknowledged.  Skilled tradesmen/women built the planet Earth. Not professionals.  Skilled Allied warriors defeated the axis regime in WWII. Not professional soldiers, sailors, and airmen.  Titles alone never did and never will produce results.  Raw talent, hard work, learning by failing, and being "all in" will yield ten-fold over a title.I hold a high degree of calm respect for the the ecletic "band of brothers" who create, do, and teach with their hands, hearts, and minds.@ ALCONSerious aside - Part I:  if all you have is $100 right now and it will introduce you into wonderful world of welding and fabrication right now, then playing (notice verb choice) with the unit may be a step in the right direction.  Right church, wrong pew.  You didn't know about WW? You didn't know that CL sells used welders for great deals? The answer to that question may be "No, I didn't".  Context folks.Serious aside - Part II:  minimal up front research should sway most humans away from taking the bait on this unit.  "Made in the USA" for this cat.  Not intending on scoring this screaming deal.  Ha!  Context folks."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-GyorgyiOriginally Posted by ZTFabYa, but that's like 450amps of pure "professional" welding power!!
