Reply:I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. Didn't know it was possible to cut steel that thick with a torch!Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:The engines much larger now and they use plasma to cut the crank arms.  That's a built up crank.  The main bearing journal and crank pin are interference fit only, no welding in the construction of the crank.  I think Sulzer/Wartsilla still builds their engines like that.  Man B&W uses a weld up type construction where the crank is built up out of forged sections that include 1/2 the main bearing journal, the crank web, and 1/2 of the crank pin.  Just think of the process involved in welding together an 18 inch diameter shaft.
Reply:"Don't need no stinkin' glasses when I'm cutting this tin, I send the sparks under the cut." Nice post!

Reply:You could probably skip the steel toed boots however. If that drops on your foot, you'd need to be wearing a tank to have any chance.
Reply:The scale of everything is unimaginable!  And not a hard hat or safety glasses in sight! It's not what you can buy, it's what you can build.
Reply:That thing had to be hot for weeks after the cut was completed!
Reply:If you look closely you can see that this is an opposed piston engine, vertical.  The doxford had rods running vertically up each side of the cylinder connected to cranks that were 180 degrees from the lower piston crank.  This was a solution to avoid cylinder head problems.  The scavenging of gases was all in one direction also but it was a nightmare of linkages.  Two pistons facing each other created the ideal spherical combustion chamber.  The magnetic tracer on the table following the template really dates this photo.
Reply:During the Second World War they had pantograph type milling machines.  Able to do trace a stock part and re create it.  All manual mechincal stuff"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
