[ATTACH]527121One of my friends told me at school he had striped the splines off the rear axle of is ATV, he asked if I could weld it all up.I got a grinder with a wire wheel to clean it up.  Then I got my Linde AC 230 stick welder, and it was set on about 110 (a little hot), then I got some Hobart1/8 6011 rods.  It took in total about 30 minutes.P.S. My earlier post was a mess up sorry bout that. Attached Images

Reply:MMmmmm, why the manufacturer put splines there if a solid  joint does the job ? Does-it?  Experience comes with trial and....errors.  Improvise and enjoy it .

Reply:it always amazes me when people post their half @$$ed repairs like they are some kind of geniuses. And then try to play it off like it's ok when they are called out for their lack of effort.so now you've wasted your time, your friends, you money on materials and will still have to buy the proper parts anyway. good job. There are no problems. Reply:Because what he did is extremely dangerous. It will break again just like Zap posted and there is a very good chance it will result in broken bones and blood.

Reply:Originally Posted by ThorsHammerAlso, he didn't fix anything. if anything he just made it more dangerous. Because now when it fails it will fail in a catastrophic manner at high speed. where as before it just stopped working.
Reply:That was a very popular repair on old Jeep CJ's with the model 20 rear axle. They had a spline section and small keyway, bigger tires and more power stripped out the splines and key pretty quick so a lot of them got welded and were run till something else broke.

Reply:Actually, the repair as made is acceptable as an emergency fix.  There is a batallion of enemy tanks approaching from the other side of the hill and you need this ATV to flee ASAP.The final repair should be a replacement axle.  If not available weld up around the stripped splines, turn on lathe back to original OD, then cut new splines.  Bore the sprocket hole larger, weld in a sleeve, now cut new internal splines in the sleeve bore.  Reassemble.  Piece of cake!  - not.  But a good adventure in the world of fabrication, machining, and repair!- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:Originally Posted by ThorsHammerin a Jeep, when the axle brakes you're in a roll cage protected, restrained, and not likely going over a jump. when this breaks, the axle fails under load. More than likely upon landing, at high speed, with no roll cage and no restraints for the rider.

Reply:This is why there are certain things you "fix" that are NOT shared here on welding web. We have ALL done them at some point.....right guys?.....guys?*crickets*Sh!t.If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience.
