At the mill friction loss can restrict air pressure. For some short term needs a second pressure tank would help. Are there rules about tank age? We have some old tanks that were stored in a warehouse about thirty years. They are in very good condition, but old. I believe they will be subject to pressure vessel inspection. What are the rules regarding age?An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Fill it completely full of water, hook a dead air hose to it, get some distance from the tank, plug the hose in to the shop air supply and stand back!!                                  MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Most portable air tank manuals state to stop use and discard after 7 years. That said the above statement would work but for a true test the pressure needs to be about 300 psi**I do DOT hydrostatic testing of cylinders. Never have tested a portable air tank nor do I have the fitting to test one.HF 90 Amp Flux Core Customized.
Reply:Ask your insurance carrier or the state boiler inspector.  Some states the boiler inspector or fire marshal will also cover un-fired pressure vessels.  They may recommend a hydro test and recommend an outside firm to certify the tanks.  Businesses should not be doing seat of the pants hydro tests.  I am sure the rules vary from state to state. Our plant has many air receivers that are 30 plus years old and are on our insurance carrier's inspection list.  He will do a visual inspection and we re-certify the relief valves on a time schedule set by them.  In our case the state leaves pressure vessel inspections up to our insurance carrier (Zurich) because their inspection criteria is more stringent than the state's.Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:These aren't portable. They are 100 gallon, I think 300 LB working pressure rated. There is a 2" tapping in each, so we can see inside and out to check for rust.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. Reply:The compressor we have at the shop was here when I worked here in the late 70'S and was probably here 20 years before that....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Check for rust, pits and also for cracks in the neck area. True test pressure should be between 600 and 900 psi depending on the DOT information on the bottle.HF 90 Amp Flux Core Customized.
Reply:re: compressed air tanksNo limit on age per se, just that most states/locales have inspection and/or pressure testing requirements for pressure vessels used in commercial service and/or 'public' buildings.  Usually not quite as stringent as for high-pressure cylinders.Try contacting http://www.pcane.com/Inspections_Com...l-Inspections/  or the Vermont Fire Safety office  http://firesafety.vermont.gov/professions/boilers  (boilers and pressure vessels are often lumped together for inspection/certification).  The best laid schemes ... Reply:A hand hydro test pump can be had pretty cheap. I'd plumb it up two pressure gauges and pressurize to 1 1/2 times max operating pressure with water only.
