I've got a question for you. Currently, I'm using a Fibre-Metal Tigerhood Futura with the lift; I opted for this helmet because it was the only one I could find that had the depth necessary to stack stuff. I've got two cover plates sandwiching a glass #10 and super blue drop-in from Phillips Safety Products.. Anyways, to the point, is there anyone out there selling poly cover plates that maintain a level of consistency when it comes to thickness, or is that just the nature of the beast? Every time I go to Praxair or Airgas and look at the 2x4.25 plates they are almost always at different levels of uber thick. Awhile back I happened past one that was more on the thinner side, and I am hoping to find a source for them, instead of looking like a weird as I rummage through the 50 little envelopes hanging on the wall.. rofl. I'm including a photo of what happens when I use the normal thick plates (notice the uneven distribution of pressure where the clip makes contact).. Normally this doesn't happen when I use the thin ones.. Not that big of an issue, but I like not having that extra pressure on the back of the drop-in/retaining clip.. I could run it without the poly plate behind the drop-in, but I'm trying to avoid crap getting in there that will f**k it up [$50.00 and worth every penny]. Maybe someone like McMaster Carr sells clear poly in a thin sheet.. Any help or trolling would be appreciated
Reply:Perhaps I'm not following exactly what you're asking and I don't mean to sound like a smart azz at all, but if I'm understanding you correctly you're worried about how the pinch bars are only touching in the center?? If so.... thats how its supposed to be??
Reply:Might be time for some Fibre-Metal helmets 101. LoLUnfortunately most of the cover plates come from China and aren't always consistent. On a Fibre-Metal helmet the back cover lens isn't actually supposed to go against the dark lens. It's supposed to go outside of the clip so the clip to hold it in is in between the cover lens and the filter. I'd guess 95% of people weren't aware of this. You also don't slide the lens in from the end. You put it in from the top through the slot just enough to clear the other side and then slide it back to pop in place. This way you don't scratch it all the way across. There's also supposed to a be a gasket behind the front cover lens in front ot the dark lens so no stray light gets through. If you want a better cover plate than the standard polycarbonate, ask for CR 39 cover plates. They cost a little more but are a better cover lens. I've found that the polycarbonate seem to get a hazy film on them, especially when MIG welding. I think Fibre-Metal actually has the CR 39 high performance cover lenses. Also some of the real thin polycarbonate lenses warp too easy from the heat of welding.
Reply:Awesome thanks guys! Yea I totally slid it through the end slot to put it in :facepalm (I thought that took a little too much effort).
Reply:I use 2 clear covers in the flip section of my fibre metal but I do that because I use an auto dark insert lens in mine. I need the inside cover to prevent pitting on my AD lens when grinding. If your using a fixed shade glass lens, you don't have to use that inside lens cover. I've never used that gasket that's supposed to inside the outer cover.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
