This is my first post so please bear with me. A few pictures so it will take more than one post. And all you flamers out there get your flamethrowers all fueled up but please wait to pull the trigger until the last post.I was replacing the rear tires on my Farmall H and discovered that the rim was rusty around the valve stem hole.

Reply:I couldn't figure out how to add captions to each photo so I hope they are self explanatory.I did all the cuts and forming of the replacement pieces with a Harris cutting torch that I bought two years ago to replace the Craftsman torch that I have used for the past 40 years. The Craftsman torch was always too small. The new Harris is unbelievably good! All the welding was done with a Lincoln AC225 that my dad bought in 1967! Still works like a champ!3/32 6011 at 60 amps. Here is my portable rig!

Reply:Do you run an innertube? I can only imagine that you would have had to do so with the rust holes.Looks like a good farm fix to me. I am not a farm boy, but I married a farm girl. Reply:I think you did an admirable job. Looks great. Congrats!
Reply:Good job. I collect/restore old tractors and get some practice doing just what you did. Every time I get an old rim I save it to cut repair patches out of. I also have a very old 225 Lincoln that my dad bought new.
Reply:Good job on it,Rex!!     Joker, that wheel is so old no one had even thought of tubeless tires.                                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Great save and one anyone on a farm can well-recognize and appreciate your work.  Now all you need is a wheel adapter for a John Deere and you'll have the perfect tractor!!!

Reply:And this awesome post makes me want to pause and watch another oldie-but-goodie, "welding on the farm."
Reply:If calcium chloride is run in the tubes, they rot out at the valve stem because that stuff eats the spring out of the core, then they start weeping.Nice repair by the way!Like the idea of using three small pieces to get around the double transitions! Most guys would have welded a small patch at the rusty spot!
Reply:the rims always rust out by the tube valve (tire fluid )  I just bought a MF and both rear rims have been repaired like that, only differance is he did a pretty ugly welding job and then he drilled the new valve stem hole about 180 degrees from the welded area. holds air good, but really ugly. rim's around here are $$$$$$$$. if ya can find them at all....
Reply:That video is awesome. I could watch stuff like that all day. Makes me think of the old Walt Disney movies.Such a simpler time. Reply:Yup, I agree.
Reply:For those rusty old wheels, we used to take the old tubes and cut the inner diameter out and stuff it into the tire over the new tube for chafe protection.  LOTS of tire tube talc (baby powder works) and never had one wear through.  Cut the valve stem out of the old tube and pass the stem of the new tube through the hole.  Kind of like an inner liner for a 10.00X20 except home made.  Of course we would clean and paint the inside of the wheel first.Nice save on the vintage iron.  Brings back a lot of memories of my misguided childhood.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:I just did the same type repair on my IH M tractor last week. It has 12.6 X 38 rims. Mine was rusted out at the tube hole as well as the outer rime edge. I had a donor wheel to cut out the replacement piece. As others have said it was caused by fluid filled tires. I sprayed the inside and outside of the wheel after welding with Permatex Rust Conversion and then a good coat of paint.ChrisAuction Addict
Reply:They are cut-off steel wheels welded to rims. You see them around but the cast center would be much more typical on a rubber tire.
Reply:Thanks for posting, I have a few old Farmalls and never thought about a rim patchGeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool GunYou'll generally find that kind of damage/rust on any old tube type rim, even if it never had Calcium Chloride in the tube.  The problem is that a tube type tire doesn't seal well around the bead, and it lets water in over time.As bad as the pitting is, it's probably time to replace the rim.  Even at only 15psi the air still packs a lot of wallup if it lets go.I had to bite the bullet a few years back, and replace the rims on the Allis AND the Oliver  That little adventure set me back over $2000"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Nice save on that rim My WD Allis needed the same. One I welded - the other was too far gone.Lucked out and found a used one for $75Both the used one, and the one I welded, I sandblasted the inside, primed and painted. Left the outside rusted to match the tractor Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:rims like this are patched every day.  I've done my share as well.  I get where you are coming from about the pressure aspect but the large round of the rim is pushed in ward which normally have plenty of gusseting in the way of a wheel center and the outward push on the bead area shouldn't be a big issue either as even if one small area is thin, it is normally surrounded on both sides by good metal.  For all the more pressure you run in a big tractor tire they do fine.   The calcium is really what eats the rims, most of the time, it is waaaaayyyyy more aggressive than plain old water.
