How come you cant do vertical down with 7018 i have done it before and not get any slag entrapment and also how do you do 6010 vertical down.Miller Dialarc 250Miller Bobcat 225Hobart Oxy/FuelCouple of Dewalt and Milwaukee GrindersJET Bandsaw and Drill Press
Reply:You got a lot to learn buddy.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024

Reply:i have seen it done with 7018 on sheet stuff that would have otherwise burned through, but thats not saying the weld was worth anything structurally, hell it probly wasn't even rain-tight.6010 is a different animal, it has much less slag to overrun your puddle, and the puddle itself is often called "fast-freeze". this allows you to whip ahead of it, let it freeze, then stack below it. the digging nature of the rod helps remove flux that starts to freeze with the puddle i guess. you will notice too, that many run red 6010 for hot/fill/cap passes because it has less slag even than its close relative, 6010 5p+, which is greyi am no downhill beast like some guys are, but that is the way i understand it.dont run 7018 downhill on anything that matters please!!!! i have not tried it, but you have me curious now to where i kind of want to section a downhill 7018 weld and see whats in therebosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Two totally different rods. 6010 has lots of penetration and a much lighter flux making downhill welds with the required strength possible. 7018 downhill can be done but it has very little penetration and a very concave weld. You're basically going down trying to keep the slag from running into your arc. They do make special 7048 that is specifically made for downhill welding.
Reply:I run 7018 down often to close a large gap on a vertical up weld. One pass down to close the gap, then weave a nice pass vertical up.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:When I was learning to weld in Louisiana in the mid '70s they used to run a downhill cap with 7018. Fill uphill, then slick a cap on downhill stringers. They used it offshore welding on platform pilings. It can be done, you have to run it hot. Not much use for it for filling, though.6010 down, not much to it. Either drag it, or whip it.
