I have a Jet 7x12 bandsaw which has started leaking gear oil. My question is, could I drain the gear box and pack it with grease instead of tearing it down and replacing the seals? I have seen farmers do this with farm equipment but don't know if  this reduces the life of the gears.
Reply:I wouldn't do that.  I would drain the oil, clean out the gear box and the gears, inspect everything in there and replace worn parts, fix the leak, and refill with the proper grade of oil.Rule of thumb for use of grease or oil:Grease slow moving parts.Oil fast moving parts.Trying to beat the engineers by using grease when the manufacturer calls for oil is beating on yourself and the machine at the same time.  The oil can circulate freely and keep everything lubricated.  Grease will get cast aside quickly and then watch from the gearbox walls as the gears disintegrate themselves.-MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:replace the rubber seal.  dont over tighten.  I had to loosen the bolt a little bit to get it to stop leaking.
Reply:Mine is leaking around the two shafts that exit the gearbox.
