I need to cut down production time on the things I make so I'm looking at ditching my trusty GMC abrasive cut off saw in favour of something that wont leave burrs on every cut I make, thereby saving time by not having to de-burr everything. My biggest unknown at the moment is, how fast do dry cut off saws cut? I don't want to buy one and find out they take much longer than my abrasive saw to cut the same material.I'm happy to spend extra $$$'s to get a faster dry cut saw. Thanks for any help.
Reply:They cut maybe 5x faster depending on material and how sharp your blade is at the time. My saw will take just a few seconds to cut most anything. I cut some 3/8 x 4 flat the other day and it cut slower, but was still under 10 seconds.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS

Reply:As was said, around 5X give or take. Even if it was the same speed you'd save time by not having to deburr as well as the improved accuracy not to mention the cost of the abrasive wheels. The only downfall is vibration, it's a killer for carbide teeth so you have to make sure it's well clamped. None of the 'leave the clamp loose and slide the piece thru' like you can do on the abrasive saws.I've been cutting for almost two days steady enough 2 x 2 x 1/8 tubing to make 25 1/2 ton truck racks like the ones in this thread http://tinyurl.com/cx67cs . I'd be scared to guess how many abrasive wheels I would have gone thru and I'm still on blade number one.....Mike
Reply:So even though the rotate roughly half the speed, approx. 1500 rpm to an abrasive saw at approx. 3000, they cut 5x faster. That's great news.Is there anything in particular I should look for in a dry cut saw? Thanks again.
Reply:I'd check out blade availability around you. You can get them online too. I'm told the Makita 12" saw is pretty good, both with a good clamp and strong base. I have the DeWalt saw and it works fine. The clamp has to be watched now and again, but I manage. I was glad I went 14", too. The Makita is a 12" and would be too small for some of the stuff I do.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:Get one with a solid base and a good clamp.   That heavy cast iron base on the Milwaukee chop saws is great, no flex whatsoever.   They're heavy suckers.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Yep, I've been eyeing off both the Dewalt and Milwaukee saws, they both seem pretty good. I'm pretty sure I can get both down here. Thanks again.
Reply:I can,t really compare the two for speed, as I don,t use an abarasive saw much. I think the material you are cutting makes a difference to, IMO 5x faster sounds a bit over the top. Can you cut alumiunium on an abarasive saw, I don,t know as I,ve never tried to. A dry cut off saw, as you call it (we call them a "cold saw") will cut just about everything wood, plastic, alumunium and all metal with the exception of high carbon (hard) steel. In this case an abarasive saw may come to the rescue. But more importantly, a dry cut off saws cut is a high quality cut, with minimal clean up. And cut,s angle accuratly etc. IMO, a dry cut off saw is a must for any serious fab/welding workshop. We get our saw blades retoothed for cutting stainless. If you have a dry cut off saw you should run a coolant on the blade, this will aid the cut and extend blade sharpness life. You will need to get the blade sharpened from time to time.http://www.brobo-usa.com/prod02.htmWe have used a Brobo for years, they get a hard time and they don,t break. I just checked out the Milwaukee site and I never knew of these saws, They look pretty good. I guess you shouldn,t use coolant on them.  Cheers MickLast edited by Horseshoe182; 10-04-2009 at 03:56 AM.
Reply:This is the one we use http://tinyurl.com/66hsvl , I'd never heard of Jancy before they bought this one and we've had it for well over a year. The only problem that has occured is the screw for the vice wore out, a piece of metric threaded rod and we've now  got three spares. The blades are around CAN$180 and they sometimes come on sale for $140 and these are the origonal Jancy Slugger blades. Tried some cheapies form Princess Auto but they were'nt worth it, wore out in no time. Can you cut alumiunium on an abarasive saw
Reply:I want to cut 4130 chrome moly. Would a dry cut saw be appropriate for cutting 4130?
Reply:Horseshoe.......where to begin.First off, a cold saw and a dry saw are two different animals and are not the same for comparison. The names are not interchangeable, even though everyone does it...even me. They are called dry for a reason..you do not use coolant on them at all. Wax will work I guess, but liquid is out. My DW is not sealed up near enough to run a liquid coolant. Liquid enters the motor housing and mixes with electricity and you can figure out the rest.Secondly, how can you comment on how fast they cut compared to an abrasive if you have never ever used the dry saw and don't have much time on an abrasive?? I mean, that was the whole point of the post. You have no and little time and yet are telling me I am over the top with my time estimate????????????? Unfreekinbelievable. I have made tens of thousands of cuts with each. I was just cutting 2x2x16ga tube on Friday. 90° cuts took about 2-3 seconds. If I did the same on an abrasive, the same cut would take about 20?? seconds. That is way faster than 5x. Siringo, I have no time cutting any 4130 at all. As long as you have the right blade, it should cut it. I also learned the hard way with stainless. I killed a brand new MS blade by making 10 stainless flat cuts. The blade only lasted 200 more cuts on MS after that. I can usually get several thousand cuts per blade as long as I don't screw up. I'd do a search here, on Miller and Hobart to see if anyone cuts 4130. I'm sure its come up before.Mr Mikey, I found my best cuts come from either DW blades, the new style or Metal Devil blades. I am going to try the Evolution blades next. I am finding DW7747 on Ebay for $70 every now and again. If not, I am looking at 125 easy.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:Thanks for the info DDA52. I will look into what blade I need for 4130, good advice. Thanks again.
Reply:My 2cents here. The mikita 12 inch is more accurate then 14. 14 inch tend to cut like abrasive, lean to one side a little but there ok. You just need to decide if depth or accuracy is what you need.1990 SA 200Miller 225  Rip Miller302Miller 135Lincoln 200 MigHypertherm 600 PlasmaPlasma Cam Cutting TableMikita Cold SawJL Welding Tx . com
Reply:The secret to accuracy with a 14 is slow down the cut. It will lean if you ram it home hard.....but if you let it cut, it stays straight.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:For cold saws I prefer the Milwaukee 14". Good clean cut, good clamp, and will do 4" pipe just fine.
Reply:X2 on the MilwaukeeG
Reply:What's the depth of cut on a 12" & 14" ??
Reply:Not sure what DW says, but I can just barely do 5" exhaust pipe on my Multicutter.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS
Reply:I've been thinking about this one for 14" dry cut chop saw.   Looks like the base is solid (cast something, probly) rather than stamped sheet.  Not sure about the clamp but it looks descently big and thick.  Can't beat the $308 MSRP.   I can probly get this through my local weld supplier for maybe $280.   The DeWalts and Milwaukees are usually in the $400+ range.   I have the Rage 1 and Rage 3 saws and am very impressed with the Rage 3.  The Rage 1 I got recently and haven't used it much yet but it cuts thin wall tube great so far.  The specs on this Rage 2 saw say it weighs 55 lbs, so it must be a fairly substantial built machine.  I think my Milwaukee 14" chop saw with the iron base probly weighs about that much.  It's a heavy sucker.Evolution Rage 2Last edited by DesertRider33; 10-05-2009 at 06:19 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Well after a fair bit more investigation, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with a 315mm (12-1/2") cold saw. I thing I have learnt is that people call these saws different things, so I'm just going to call it a wet cold saw as it has a coolant system.I was sold on the idea of a bandsaw, but then I realised how large they were, I'd have to extend my shed.Another thing I didn't think about was the weight of these things, 175Kg (about 385 pounds). I'm going to try and tee up with the bloke up the road to get it delivered to his work and then borrow him and his forklift to set it up in the shed. One thing that really helped was Youtube. I just typed in cold saw and all these videos came up, so  I could see how they went cutting things.
Reply:I'm still looking at saws and still haven't bought anything yet. I've started looking at bandsaws now. What would cut quicker a cold saw (one with a coolant system) or a bandsaw (also with a coolant system).Obviously a bandsaw can cut a wider range of sizes so I could use it for more jobs, but I'm wondering if its cuts slower than a cold saw??

Reply:Anyone using the Jancy or Milawkee circular metal cutting saws? I was tempted by these a while back. http://www.milwaukeetool.com/Product...+Circular+Sawshttp://www.jancyslugger.com/index.cf...&productid=123Originally Posted by flydrifterNo woodchuck comments???
