I have a 50 lb can of Jetweld LH-70 7018 H4R and the slag is extremely hard to remove compared to a box of Hobart 7018-1 I got at Tractorsupply. The slag on the hobarts mostly comes off by raking the chipping hammer over the weld but with the jetweld's i have to pound the crap out of them and it comes off in a powder from me pounding on it so long and if i use a grinder with a wire wheel sometimes i have to really push and get at the slag at different angles. WHy is the Jetweld slag so hard to remove. Also the color is different the hobarts have like a goldish brown slag and the Jetwelds have a Brown blackish slag.Miller Dialarc 250Miller Bobcat 225Hobart Oxy/FuelCouple of Dewalt and Milwaukee GrindersJET Bandsaw and Drill Press

Reply:lh 70 7018 is the best 7018 in my opinion.  i love the stuff.   the idea is to make a good weld, not make easy slag removal.   if you want easy slag removal, get some 6013.   lh 70, has more penetration than excalibur, and some others.

Reply:im not saying that.   its probabaly got the same filler tensile and values as other 7018s.   I think whatever ingrediant that is added to the flux to give stability, it lacks, therefore you get a little more pen., and don't weld as smooth as xcal, or may not look as pretty when done.    Most people favor xcal, If i could only have one 7018, it would be lh70
Reply:The Hobart and Lincoln rods may have different "sweet spots."Have you tried adjusting the amps up or down a little on the Lincoln rods? Might make the difference.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:your a farmer, your probally fixing cracks in equipment, in hard to get to spots to clean or prep, etc.    I can't think of a better 7018 than lh for that.   Give it a chance.
Reply:Lots of 7018 better than any Lincoln in my opinion. Blueshield, OK 55, Atom arc, etc. That said, different brands don't all use the same amps. Like MinnesotaDave said, you need to find the sweet spot with each rod. 7018-1 is actually a little better than standard 7018 in that it meets impact strength requirements at a lower temperature.
Reply:I normally use ESAB atom arc 7018 1/8 but when i went to pick up my wireless remote at airgas they only had lincoln 7018 so i got a can of the excalibur to try i'm also running 7018 3/16 ESAB acclaim...When it's too windy to run dual shield wireBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:I noticed the Hobart 418 ran nice, but the slag was thick and hard to remove. I like ESAB, Lincoln and my favorite, McKay."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:LH-70 is what I use at home, and I find the task of slag removal about the same as all the other 7018's I've ran...
Reply:Turn the heat down. Hard slag with any lohi rod means either the heat is too high or you are in a narrow groove like a deep narrow V.Lincoln lohi's will clean as easy as any when all is right.J
Reply:I experimented with different amperages and on my Dialarc 250 i need to set them at about 116 and on my Bobcat 225 i need to set it at about 119Miller Dialarc 250Miller Bobcat 225Hobart Oxy/FuelCouple of Dewalt and Milwaukee GrindersJET Bandsaw and Drill Press
Reply:LH-70 is high iron powder E-7018 old school you love it or hate it .We welded our race cars with 3/32 rods never a problem.Higher amps for slag removal.
Reply:Most 7018 run best around 130 amps but can run as hot as 160 amps.

Reply:I don't know what welder you guys are running your 7018's on ....... But on my Millers or Lincoln's  3/32- 70-----80 amps, 8's ----100 - 120 amps , 5's-------135-150 amps----- and 3's -----160------190 amps.......If the slag is hard to get off, your running tooooooo hooooot......
Reply:If your running a Lincoln and it takes more amps than recommended...........It's probably cause your running your SA  without the doors on...........

Reply:jet has always been my go to wire for 7018 and 7024. never had problems with it and have used it on repairing heavy equipment, splicing beams/piles and columns.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:I like the jetweld lh-70 and the slag comes off easy so who knows what the op is welding with
Reply:well, i think the op knows what he has.   and i can relate to his gripe.   the face of the finished weld on lh70, tends to lay lower- flatter,    the excal and some others naturally give more of a crown on the face of the weld.   That extra + contour, aides in the knocking off slag effort.
Reply:Originally Posted by 123weldglad to see you like it.   it costs more than xcal.   but the only problem i have once in a great while, is it will fingernail on vertical ups.  I'm not sure what causes that every now and then?  When  it becomes unmanagable, and i cant fight it, I'll switch to xcal, and being it has a more stable arc, it takes care of my problem.
