I thinking of getting one of the porta band saws. I like the holder they have but you can only cut 90 with it. Has any one seen one that can cut a 45. It is tough to cut straight with out a holder. Thanks for any info.
Reply:If the holder you are looking at is the holder I've seen, I think it's way over priced for what you get. Is it the one that is made by Milwaukee for the band saws? Maybe $250 bucks or so? The down side, there ain't no alternative other than building your own which is a major PIA all by itself.
Reply:Yes that is the one. It is way over priced. I was hoping that someone have seen one out there. I can't be the only one wanting this option to cut a 45 angle.

Reply:grizzly sells a saw and stand for$150.00 im sure the saw is nowhere as good as the milwauke saw may be they sell the standsep. Attached Images
Reply:Drich, I have the milwaukee saw & table you are describing & you are right it is only good for 90 degree cuts. I also do not like the chain style vise it is very combersom to use. I recently bought an Evolution rage 3 compound miter saw & love it. Check it out on you tube, it cuts everything & for around 280 bucks its well below what you will pay for the milwaukee saw & table
Reply:rdionne, I was looking at the evolution until I saw the price of the blades. What is the thickest material you can cut, and do you get alot of use out of the blade, before you change it.Thanks
Reply:How are they on thick steel? Some thing like 1/2 or 5/8 thick by 3". Can they handle that? Thanks
Reply:Also with the Milwaukee what is the largest pipe and square tube you can cut with the saw in it's table fixture? Can a person rig up a better clamp system?
Reply:You should try going to lathemasters.com . They have a benchtop bandsaw/chop saw which I did buy one from them. There is a review at www.thms.tedatum.com. The original maker of the bandsaw is Kama and they sell their version for $900 or more.
Reply:That would be nice to have. Those kuma's are like 4 grand. A bit out of my range. Who else makes one like that?
Reply:I know it's not a band saw, but does anyone use a "dry-cut" saw? I know milwaukee makes one, and northern tool has them. I think they start around $300. They work like a regualr chop saw, but run at a slower rpm, and they don't make the work piece hot at all. also, there are no sparks.....like with an abrasive cut off saw. All you get are small metal chips. pretty cool and very fast! It won't replace a bandsaw for certain jobs, but they seem like a good tool to have in the shop.
Reply:cajun welder & drich, I have cut a bunch of 2x2x1/4 square tube, 2x2x1/4 angle, 1 1/2 sch 40 pipe 2x2x1/4 flat bar, 1/2 sq bar 3/8 sq bar, 2" pvc pipe & a bunch of 1x4 pine all with the same combo blade for the rage 3 I have had it for a little over a month now. just to try it I cut a piece of 2" solid round bar & had no problem, & the blade is fine. |
