Iam wanting to build a table for a 9" southbed lathe.I tried the search button but could not find what i was looking for.so if any of you guys have any pictures please post them up.I was thinking of using 4"channel with two HF 7 drawer end cabnetsfor storage, and making a stainless steel chin pan.66"long and 24"wideI am limited for space, thats why for 24" width, thinking about a overhead motor mount also btw i am no machinest Thanks in advancemike
Reply:No overhead drive...just the pivot drive found on most 9" South Bends. 3/8" steel top over a 2" thick conference room door cut down to fit on top of a 2" square tube bench frame.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:Nothing special but here's what I did for my 3 in 1. Only idea worth stealing is the rear shield to keep the off crap the drywall. FYI, I used cut down roller lifters on the catch tray:If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:Fabricate your table/stand as heavy and rigid as possible. Try to make sure your top is as flat you canpossibly get it.   Vibration from a lightweight stand can affect surface finishes. If your top is not right when bolting thelathe to it you run the risk of twisting the bedways thus affecting accuracy.
Reply:got lucky & found this stand on ebay, & close to me. its a southbend underdrive stand, i removed the guts, & made some modifications, & it worked great. i think i was into it for a hundred bucks, stand parts & paint. its long gone now & i am on my 3rd lathe,,,, its a sickness!!!!!!! any way here are some pics Attached Images
Reply:rdionne you have any pictures of the underdrive
Reply:The most important part of a stand for a lathe is its ability to resist twist.  Everything else is just frosting.  So start by building an untwistable part for the lathe to bolt to and then enlarge to your hearts content.  One of the best untwistable lathe stands I have ever seen was a piece if Junior channel to sit the lathe on, welded  to a piece of 4/4-1/4 inch tubing with blocking every 6 inches from the tube to the chanell sitting vertical. My friend that bought it from someone already built swore that he could take a full 1/16 cut with no twist.  He would have tryed a bigger cut but the lath wasn't strong enough to do it   Mac
Reply:unfortunately i do not have any pics of the underdrive,                                         Bob
Reply:First one showing on a Google Image search. Should be more than enough detail... EDIT: If the lathe you have wasn't a factory underdrive set-up, you may encounter problems with the belt clearance and the headstock bed foot.Last edited by WyoRoy; 11-28-2013 at 12:35 PM.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:If you have the standard rear mounted drive, it would be far easier to just swap the mounting location. Either fabricate the necessary mount or attach the drive to a homemade splash guard like the user did.
