Hello all!I picked this metal lathe up last night, and was wondering if anyone can identify it.It seems to be an atlas, but I am not sure, the whole thing is about 4 1/2' long, it has about 26" center. The bed is made of metal clad wood, the wood is a very solid hard wood, so hard I can hardly make a scratch in it, and it is set on cast end pieces. The stand was home made, and the drive is made to attach separate from the lathe head stock and runs the head gears with a flat drive belt.Everything is solid and in good condition and works! These pictures I took last night aren't the best, but I can take some more in the light of day today!Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!Ken. Reply:Identity confirmed:  ANTIQUE!!!I think your on the right track looking at Atlas as the manufacturer.  I've seen pics of other old lathes labeled as Atlas similar to the one pictured.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:The tailstock sure looks like the one on my 10" Atlas. The headstock, if it is an Atlas, is considerably older than mine ('47).I wonder if someone made the bed in order to get a longer center to center distance?RexLast edited by rode2rouen; 11-25-2009 at 05:13 PM.Reason: speelage
Reply:Looks a lot like my 9'' South Bend. Is there a serial number stamped on the end of the bed on the right side?
Reply:Thanks guys!No serial numbers anywhere. It does seem that it might very well be a south bend!A pre 9" model, possibly made during the depression, south bend made a few models that they was experimenting with to make it cheaper to produce, hence the wooden bed and manual feed.it wasn't until after the depression that they came out with the 9" like yours Recker, using the same head stock and motor drive system!I wish I could verify its date and model though!#1. Reply:It all looks like a South Bend to me except for the lead screw going down the middle in between the ways. If it is an old southy and you can't find the serial number at the tail stock end, front rail, then it's freakin' old. They started putting serial numbers on them in July of 1910 starting with the number 700. http://www.wswells.com/serial_number.htmlWondering what that hole on the tail stock is for? The one that has nothing in it, no threads, and appears to be useless. It's a lithium grease well and there's a brass dipper that goes in it. You use it to keep the dead center lubricated. Just an odd fact I know.Mine is not that old. It's a '53 South Bend 9C. Here it is when it was first given to me. I've since done little more than take it apart, wipe everything down, and put it back together. It makes me few bucks at least once a week. Otherwise it its in the corner of my hop like a neglected stepchild.Last edited by ArgonWelding; 11-26-2009 at 02:36 AM.Reason: I may be wrongBill LambertArgon WeldingABQ NMSic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc
Reply:I have this one figured out.It is a South Bend 8" junior, made around 1931-32-33, I have found another 8" that has parts missing and has the parts I don't and I have the parts it needs on this one, I am going to try and get it and combine the two to make one good one! Thanks all!#1.
