This is for the Festival of Trees in Utah where Christmas trees with all sorts of themes are auctioned off to raise money for Primary Children's Hospital. My friends brother is working on a theme, although I don't know what it is, and asked if I could give him a metal frame to build a treasure chest. Once complete I will send it up to him to complete the wood work, velvet, finish, etc. I will try to get pictures, but I wont have finished pics until the middle of next month. In the next day or two I plan on completing it (still have to create the rounded top, add some more strapping to the bottom, put hinges and a lock on it, etc). Here is a pic as to what we are shooting for.The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:For a faux rivet head I have used large nails and "distressed" them by hammering them to simulate the marks that would be left by disrupting them with a ball pien. Cut the head off and braze/solder or glue them in place.Just a suggestion! Reply:I agree with Burpee. Some carriage bolts would be quick and easy to do and look like the old rivets. You could drill a larger hole with a spade bit on the inside big enough for the nuts to be recessed. Cut the bolts to fit. Hardest part would be to square up the hole in your straps to accept the carriage bolt.Great project by the way, John. Good luck with the auction.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com

Reply:Nicely done. I've actually been thinking about making MUCH smaller treasure chests for the boys...something just large enough to hold a few of their mementos and 'treasures.'Kevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio

Reply:Actually, they are going to take furniture tacs and JB weld them on as that is the cheapest option. 25 for about a buck and a half. You can get some pretty stylish ones too.The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:cool project and for a good cause the talent of people amazes me like to see the end project thak you for sharing
Reply:The people that worked on it after me put on the rivets, painted it, and placed the wood in it. Turned out nice enough they don't want to use it with their current theme in the festival of trees, so they are going to save it for next year and do a pirate theme. Either way, it still goes to helping the kids out, either this year or next. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:Turned out very nice. Good job.I'm a bit disappointed by the hasp though. With all the work that went into the lock, the cheap hardware hasp is a bit of a let down to me. I can understand the need to get this done in a hurry due to time constraints though, and sometimes you just have to compromise. I guess it's not so much the whole hasp, as it is the part on the lower piece with the stamped loop that disappoints me. The top part could have used a bit of reshaping and looked as nice as the lock with minimal effort. The lower loop probably wouldn't have been that hard if you made it similar to the loops for the handles. The rear hinges I can live with, since they don't hardly show at all. I'd have set them out towards the edges farther myself and possibly used larger ones to go with the scale of the trunk..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I think for next Christmas I am going to make one of these for each of my kids, but I may let them weather a bit and then clear coat them after they weather. I think D rings would look better for the handles, which I will probably do, and creating a new hasp wouldn't be hard. Ya, I was under a serious time crunch to get it done before I had to leave for the week. I even took a half day off work to get it done in time. I still like the way it turned out though, even if I did have to purchase some of the hardware. The Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --
Reply:Now's the time to get started welding up the next charity item for next year. Since they are thinking pirate themed, maybe a nice black power canon. Having an anchor in your yard is nice, but nothing beats a good size canon you can shoot off for the 4th of July! .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
