I noticed on youtube a lot autobody repairers use welding primer, but nobody at fab school mentioned it. Not sure if it's worthwhile using. What's your thoughts?
Reply:I think you are talking about weld-through primer. It allows you to coat all unprotected metal to prevent corrosion and be able to weld over it (MIG or STICK, I don't think it is compatible with TIG). I have never used it, however, as far as I have read here, it doesn't weld as clean as bright metal.I don't think you need it unless you have a project which you know it is going to take a lot of time to complete (working on and off only during weekends over a few months kind of project).
Reply:Use it to prime surfaces that are unreachable after welding.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Weld through primers some seem to be copper based others zinc. As a journeyman autobody mechanic in this day it is unheard of not to use it but have found difficulty with. 024 er70s6 wire which is the most common wire used in autobody, works well with. O30.I have ground hss, put my spot welds in and tried to get zinc chromate wash primer in around welds. Weld through primer is said to draw in around weld as it cool. I feel guilty when I don't use it. Factory spot weld tech is beginning appear in shops along with adhesives. Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk |
