I need to know each individual piece of equipment needed to use a 7018 rod to weld. I need to make a list for a project, this is the only requirement.
Reply:What size 7018 rod?
Reply:Your question is poorly written. Are you asking what things are welded using 7018 rods ( ie bridges, heavy equipment, structural steel) , or are you looking for what things you need to weld ( ie welder, hood, gloves, etc)?Sorry if you want someone to spoon feed the answers to you, so you can regurgitate the answers for a class question, at least ask clearly enough so we know what you want..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:You need one AC/DC welding machine, one ground clamp with cable that matches machine connection, One of those thingies that holds the rod with cable attached that matches machine connection, and a power source to match machine. One of those 7018 rods. Oh, close eyes or one welding hood , one glove for right or left hand depending what hand you hold electrode holder . That's the cheap way .

Reply:Jumper cables and a car battery work
Reply:I apologize if my question is "poorly written" I was not sure how to word this question. As I have no idea what a 7018 rod even is or even how it is used to weld. Furthermore, I couldn't even tell you how a weld works at all. But this is not my project. And I have not asked for anyone to spoon feed me. I simply need a list of items that are used to do this job so that I can research them. I have tried Google and came up very, very short because I have no idea what I'm even looking for. I was sure that experienced welders, like yourselves, would be able to help me with at least this part so that I could at least get up on my feet to begin my research. Now, if you need a clearer explanation in order to assist me then simply asked, I will assist with that. My project is to design a facility in which mild steel is welded with a 7018 rod. (This is the only detail my professor has given, I do not know what that means)It is not my project to elaborate on the welding process, I simply need to provide detail on what I am using to weld and then I must engineer out and hazards this brings up.I need to know what equipment needs to be in this shop so that I may begin to design and address these hazards. I am a student of engineering safety, not of welding.
Reply:Bistineau,I was unaware there were different sizes?
Reply:Where you located, maybe a member here could show you there shop/equipment . You could get an explanation and take pictures. Also some colleges have welding labs on campus, maybe your campus has one you could look at.Last edited by guajilloweld03; 03-03-2015 at 12:15 PM.

Reply:If you try some google-fu on the simple and direct 'question' of "7018 welding", Google comes back in less than 1/2 second with over 376,000 results. If you google the 'question' of "welding safety", Google comes back with over 67,000,000 results (again, in less than 1/2 second for me).If your assignment involves something with "7018" and you don't know what that is (no shame in that, most non-welding people wouldn't know), then you can ask Google (or whatever search engine you want to use) about "What is 7018 welding".  Google comes back with 422,000 'answers' to that question. The 'shame' is not in not knowing the answer(s).  To me, the shame is in not doing even a simple Google search about "7018" and "welding".  The best laid schemes ... Reply:So you are going to know absolutely nothing about what welders are doing, and make it absolutely safe to do whatever it is they do ??????
Reply:The education system in this country is so messed up.It isn't even funny.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:Personal protection equipment, tools to clean and prep the steel surface, brush and chipping hammer to remove the post-weld slag andNow inside a facility, you need a workspace that is spark/fire resistant, maybe shields or dividers to prevent others from looking at or being exposed to the arc.  Fire extinguishers are a must.  Don't forget good lighting and ventilation. If you have a nearby community college with a welding program, take a tour of the shop class and note the equipment, booths and so forth.Last edited by Oldendum; 03-03-2015 at 12:49 PM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Perhaps this may help you understand a few more things. Dig around on this fellas "channel" for some more "stick" videos. Good luck with your project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=P...yer_detailpage Pidge.
Reply:I have a friend who used to do safety analysis for the New York Subway system. It was his job to go around and do safety inspections and investigate work place accidents. He told his boss he wanted to go to every safety seminar any of the workers had to attend. His point was it was pointless for him to investigate what workers should or shouldn't have done, if he didn't understand their jobs.  Thus he did all the confined space, hazmat, fire, scissor lift, fork lift etc training. Every time I saw him he'd been to some other training seminar. It might have been track safety, or operating overhead cranes, you never knew..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:For a quick introduction, 7018 is a code designating a type of "electrode" (or "stick electrode" or "rod" or "stick") that melts during the process to add metal to a weld.  Why a professor would specify the particular electrode seems odd - the specific code wouldn't really change how you would design a building.  But anyway, the electrode is used in the welding process formally called shielded metal arc welding ("SMAW") and informally "stick welding" or "arc welding".  Your best bet - and the easiest way to find out the hazards, equipment requirements, safety gear, additional materials, and how the process works sufficient for your needs would be to download an operating and safety manual from the Miller or Lincoln websites for one of their welders that is designed for SMAW.  You might also take a look at some basic welding videos produced by Lincoln on YouTube about arc welding.  There are additional items needed to prep material for welding and to clean up a weld when done.  Plus you'll have to guess as to what exactly is being welded.  Big difference in equipment if you're welding small parts vs. adding structural support to large beams. As someone said, seeing and trying the process would help, hence youtube to see educational material and watch some welders actually doing the job.  For example "pipeline welding" on YouTube will pull up some amazing video.Good luck with you education and career.
Reply:You also need something to scrape contaminants off the end of the rod before you try re-igniting it. 7018 can be a pain in the butt if you aren't familiar with it.
