I recently bought a chop saw for wood and installed a metal cutting blade in it.I have cut a 1x1 1/4" inch thick wall tube and worked ok.does anyone see why this would'nt work for other stuff.I bought the saw for 20.00 so as not to ruin my good ryobi.here are some picts.http://www.californiachopperculture.comMiller Thunderbolt 225Miller DVI
Reply:make sure the rpm of the saw  matches the recommended rpm of theblade...
Reply:Looks like he put an abrasive blade in it...Ashamed as I am to admit it, I melted a few of the plastic parts of my very nice Makita 14" wood cutting miter saw by using it with an abrasive blade to cut steel.   It cuts wood and aluminum beautifully with a carbide blade, but the abrasive blade throws too many hot sparks that melt stuff, plus the motor turns too slow and doesn't have enough torque to cut steel efficiently with an abrasive blade.  Like said above, it also spins too fast to cut steel with a carbide blade.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Like mentioned I would say the lack of a good clamp is going to be a problem.  Especially if that is a carbide blade in there.  If it is an abrasive blade I would be worried about the rpms and the blade shattering.  I've seen a couple of them shatter and it isn't pretty and especially if the rpms are 5200 which I just looked up a new 10" delta miter saw and that's what it says.  My dewalt dry cut saw with carbide blade spins much slower, 1300 rpms.  If the metal you are cutting moves due to lack of being clamped good and the blade shatters(it's more like an explosion) at 5200 rpms, chances are you will be picking little peices of abrasive disc from your skin.
Reply:Most of the guys have covered this pretty well. Sparks and hot material plays hell quickly with any plastic parts. The motors not designed to suck all that abrasive crud and steel grindings up and keep running like a normal metal chopsaw. I've seen guys toast a motor super fast doing this. That said since it looks to be mostly metal and only cost $20, if you could rig a good clamp and the blades are in the RPM zone for that saw, what have you really lost if it dies?Personally I wouldn't use it for that, but then I have 2 chopsaws for steel, and 2 bandsaws as well as other misc cutting equipment I've gathered over the years. Just be careful to lock the stock down and run the right RPM blade..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I made the mistake of trying to run a dry cut metal blade in an abrasive chop saw.  It worked like a champ for 4 or 5 cuts, then it wouldn't cut a thing.  I didn't check the max speed when I intalled the blade and burned it up.  $90 lesson...America Needs AMERICA'S Oil!!!"Global warming is the greatest scam in history ...There is no run away climate change.
