'afternoon all.Am working on a ~30T shop press and have decided to take my camera along for the ride. Not quite finished yet but thought I'd post a short excerpt (4mins).After posting/watching I realized that, dang, I sure talk alot.  I'm usually not that yappy.Maybe it's because it felt like I was talking to myself so it came natural.   Thought I'd shareanyway.Anyway, here I'm modifying the scrap cylinder I found.  Sorry no arc shots but thereare some while stick welding the frame (more on that later).I'm just a weekend welder so go easy on me.Enjoy.  comments/criticism welcomed of course.Tonyps. I'll edit a little harder next time, I promise.
Reply:nothing on tv tonight?I've got you covered. full press build.. the first few minutes show finished press and some screw'n around.. then 25 mins orso of the actual build.comments/criticism welcomed of course.  -Tony
Reply:I really like the movable head and the use of used stuff. If you ever find another pump like that I would like to get my hands on one. I see a couple of structural problems. First, no ties or cross members in the uprights. The material is overkill for that job, but with no ties it will want to move. If you actually put 30 tons of pressure on a 1 1/8" pin, it will bow, only a little, but it will bow. When that happens you have a rainbow and your 2 flats will be pulling up towards the top of the bow and will want to slide to the center to relieve the pressure. Also the table needs a tie or cross member from top to bottom for the same reason. The web of a channel has very little strength to prevent spreading. When that pin gets it's bow the channels will want to spread. You will get the same on the same on the top. I see your bars for working and they are good, but with 30 tons on them they will have a bow as well and you end up with the same problem. Also with 30 tons of pressure and no stiffeners in the web of your channels they could accordion. And that is not even taking into account all the times in the real world where we need to press odd shaped items. You have some really good ideas on how to make it easy to use it I just think it needs some strengthening.Last edited by welderj; 09-28-2013 at 12:15 PM.
Reply:thanks welderj, good points.I left the uprights open to perhaps one day day bend pipe or if I have to get something long in sideways. Now that its put together I can probably add some supports and still be out of the way.  (probably not alot ofbending 8" pipe  )I'm feeling this thing out now, haven't made it to 25T.. will likely add reinforcement where the press tells me it needsit. Thanks again.
Reply:I enjoyed your build video. Beats watching TV. Can you post a picture of the plaque you milled/engraved?

Reply:Thanks all.Sorry for the delay, haven't checked in in a bit.. here's a picture of the plaque -- its notas pretty up close and personal, but does the trick.  Can you find the lazy zero?Quick tip to anyone making a plaque -- use a clean, scratch & ding-free piece of stock."just any ol' piece of scrap will do" and someone somewhere will request a close up photoof it. CNC engraving probably won't hurt either.[/URL]

Reply:Nice video, really enjoyed it, especially the self deprecating humour and you admitted making mistakes instead of hiding them.Lot to learn from this video, You have many features I haven't seen before, let us know as a follow up what changes you make and how it all works out for you.Did I say I really enjoyed this? Reply:Awesome build!I find myself daydreaming about building a press for myself since I can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for without having to sell a vital body part.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:"Mig like Tig ... yeah I saw that online .... well this is my personal take on it ... [shows welds] ... Stick like Crap .... but don't worry ... I always reinforce my welds with a heavy paint job ... you know, sometimes it doesn't take much to get you over the line"LOLOL!!!  You've got a gift for storytelling.  Thank you for sharing the video and I'm only half way through
Reply:Press looks really good and that's a nice shop you have.  Good luck with your new machine.
Reply:thanks all, I appreciate it.So far so good with the press -- I'm slowly getting some tooling together as needed / or just plainscrew'n around.I built a 15mm (~9/16") punch/die for it.Video is the whole build, starts off with a demo.. then some turning, heat treating, sharpening, etc.. all in the garage.
