Reply:As u can see its the structure for the stage lighting. It probably holds around 1000 lbs of lights or more  60 feet above the seats. Scary situation to say the least. Looks like it was mostly 6010 or 6011 down hill, but I can't see how someone could get so many discontinuities that way...
Reply:Scary chit! I pick out crap like that all the time! That's why I stay away from doing certain things. Like riding roller coasters, or getting in someones race car that I have never been underneath and so on. If I had my way everyone would own a hand gun and you would have to go through a backround check and need a permit to buy a welding machine! True!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:I found it very appalling.  This work was done for the city, by a licensed contractor and it passed inspection to boot!the design is bad too. Its hanging from wood rafters rather than building steel. If I take my kids to see the nut cracker we will be sitting in the balcony for sure.
Reply:Looks like it could use a new coat of paint.

Reply:looking for crappy welds is like some kind of welder's curse. it would even make a great reality tv show. legions of undead welders marching through the night in search of bad welds.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:that's the bldg. inspectors for ya, here in minneapolis a very major bridge fell down several years ago, (35W over the mississippi) killing ppl and the like, not one person even mentioned that the state inspectors O.K.ed the build from day one, problem was that the Gusset plates were to thin....the construction Co. used the wrong size and not one inspector said a dam thing.....I also have issues with work done on my house, they charge $$$$ for the inspection permit but don't do there job and INSPECT....
Reply:Oh, those were welds?? I thought maybe they should call a pest control outfit, obviously pigeons getting into the attic and crapping on the joints.  Originally Posted by docwelderlooking for crappy welds is like some kind of welder's curse...
Reply:Its all so true!I find it amazing how ugly welds on stuff is over looked when people are buying something from big manufacturers even on stuff like trailers and whatnot. But when I am making a part with welds I feel if the weld is ugly the whole part isn't worth the price any more.

Recently out to dinner with my wife, staring at the railing in the patio area, and her comment, "(long sigh..) you're critiquing the welds arent you!". Yep, cant help it. It looks nice but I'm glad its not structural, they needed a lot more heat. Sorry, hon.
Reply:Part of the building I work in collapsed over the weekend. So you best believe I was looking at the welds on the beams when I came back. Now I have another reason why I am looking for a new job.Sent from under a Miller welding helmet

Reply:I have the same sickness.  I may not be the best metal gluing guy in town, but I don't go charging people for pigeon poop either. I recently took pictures of a trailer at work. It is a Kiefer trailer. The welding is so crappy. But if you sell it, people will buy it. If you want to scare yourself to death, go to Las Vegas and park on the 2nd floor of any parking garage and walk around looking at the welds. You know those same crappy welds are holding the rooms up next door too!!!!! Who lets these jackwagons use the stinger?????????If I offended you or your welding, you probably deserve it. If you welded up the Kiefer trailer or the parking garage, go ahead and fess up!!!Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:now your getting me going, I keep thinking about welds and catch myself looking for shabby welds, and there out there too......scary.
Reply:some of the worst welding i ever seen was in Vegas,  One of my favorite things to do during the construction boom in Vegas on the strip was com out side around 12Pm at night after having several adult beverages and hearing an air arc in the distance.   When your tipsy you can take pleasure in other peoples pain much more easily. Its even better at 3am then you REALLY know someone F'ed up.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Heck, our welding professor used to give us verbal directions to structural joints around campus that were visible. Most of those were done with heavy fluxcore. And most all of them were quite good. But out in the "real world"...ouch!!City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDannyMy profession is Nondestructive Examination, been doing it for almost 40 years.  One of the way to learn weld defects however, is to learn to weld.  A full welding course was part of our training, therefore how I learned to weld back when I was 18.  A great skill to have, however it is more of a hobby for me although I did do some industrial welding for a short time.  Once when I was out in the field doing some inspections on a ski lift, I saw some of the worst welds I have ever seen.  Many were cracked and some so bad you could stick your fingers in where they should not fit!  After we reported out findings of the first day of testing they told us not to come back to finish the job.  I guess they didn't really want to know the condition of their equipment.  I don't ski!
