I inherited my Grandpa's old oxy acetylene rig and finally ran out of oxygen.  To get it refilled, do I need to return to the supply company from which he acquired the bottle or can I go to any gas supplier?  I tried calling the supplier named on the bottle & local suppliers but they're closed on weekends.  I don't live close to the original supplier so I'd prefer to find a local supplier if possible.I was just curious since the name is not just stuck on with a paper tag but it's also in raised letters on a collar that's part of the neck of the bottle.  The company's initials are also stamped on the bottle. Thanks from a new hobbyist weldor.
Reply:After reading my question, I think I should ask instead what's the norm for suppliers when getting your bottle refilled.  I'm guessing that each company could theoretically make their rules. Thanks again!
Reply:Welcome, Poncho- unfortunately there is no "norm" for suppliers; it varies from region to region. Your cylinder may or may not be considered an "owner" bottle, which will determine how the LWS/refiller will handle it. If it's an owner bottle and you bring it to the company whose name is on the neck ring they may swap it for a full, no questions asked. If it's a larger bottle, it may be on a lease or they may want to start charging you demurrage ("rent"). Best bet is to call ahead before you start hauling it around, see what you're getting into. It also helps to shop around: if it's an owner bottle other companies may fill it; prices can vary widely.
Reply:It all depends on the LWS. Generally, I've found that they will take an old cylinder and probably only charge you for a hydrotest if it's out of date. The theory there is that they will net a new customer if they exchange for you. I switched from Air Gas to a smaller company and they took my customer-owned cylinders for exchange with no questions asked. Just find all of the local welding supply companies and start calling. One or all of them will help you out. Nowadays no one is turning down plus business.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:I also suggest to call around and ask for prices on a fill, it can vary quite a bit from place to place.
Reply:Thank you all for your replies.  I'll call around Monday.By the way, this is a great site!  You are a talented bunch and I can learn a lot from your posts!
Reply:Location and prices vary to tank size and contents. It would help knowing your location.
