Last week saw the Schweissen & Schneiden exhibtion take place in Essen, Germany. It is still regarded as being the largest Welding related exhbition in the world and takes place every 4 years and is still THE place where most major machine manufacturers launch/showcase there new products, processes and innovations. This year Lorch, launched a new 230v MMA inveter called a Micor160. It can run a 4mm CEL Electrode and be used on conventional mains or a generator........as well as this the machine can also be run off something called MobilePower1, which is a Re-Chargeable battery! So this means that you can now weld completely off grid, you can burn up 22 OFF 2.5mm Electrodes or around 12 x 3.2mm Electrodes from one charge.Complete weight of the unit is around 12 kg (Machine on its own approx 4.9KG)So now you really can weld anywhere you want.Just wondered what you guys thoughts were on this, given that old school oil filled Transformer welders were really common place not so long back......

Reply:Nothing new.  Lincoln had a little battery powered mig out for a while.  my gowelds and also ready welder will weld off a couple of batteries or a CC/CV power source. There are a couple other similar machines out as well. Miller or TA has one.   Sent w/ Tapatalk using Swype, pls excuse typosTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Not yet but we are working on that. As an interim measure each machine comes with a comprehensive list of all McDonalds, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell locations

Reply:That my go welds is the spool on gun run off a car battery isn't it? That's also available over here in the UKNot quite the same thing, I am talking about a dedicated purpose built battery specifically for powering a MMA power source during welding. The existing battery technology didn't really lend itself to welding applications (due to the almost dead short and fast drain of power) so a new battery design had to be made.
Reply:now there is a case where made in America should have stayed in America.  If you did not think McDonalds could get any worse, eat at a UK MD's, it will make American MD look like a gourmet burger.   also adult burgers are smaller than the USA kids meal.  same applies to Taco Bell!Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Yes 100% agree. American fast food is a million times nicer and better value.Taco Bell is not very common place here, McD's by far the biggest, then KFC and Burger King. Burger King lost a lot of share after the horse meat scandal!
Reply:Some pictures from the exhibition
Reply:Looks neat, but if it's as light as they claim, it must use high-current Li-ion batteries like what are used in electric cars. Meaning the battery pack ain't gonna be cheap!Lorch is not well known on this side of the pond. The only Lorch welder I have seen for sale here is an obscure pulse-MIG machine sold by Thermal Arc. I doubt we will see this new one here any time soon. Hobart makes a battery-powered MIG welder but I don't know of any others, never mind a battery-powered stick welder. Presumably this technology will get more common as these high-capacity batteries get less expensive... not holding my breath, though.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:The battery is the 'big' investment, retail would be around 1700 USD, but the battery can be purchased as/when required. Many people won't ever have need for the battery so they just buy the MMA inverter (simerla price to other premium quality 230v MMA inverters on the market) and run it from the mains or generator, but it's nice to know that in 6-12-18 months time you did need a battery then you can buy one.For the people who would find the battery essential, then the price is not so bad if it means they don't have drag heavy extension cables up scaffolding or drag a generator way out into the middle of a field just to make 5 mins welding. If you split the battery cost by the 1000 guaranteed re-charge cycle then less than two dollars for 22 electrodes or around 20 mins Tig welding isn't so bad
