Pulsed MIG.........

This semester I'm taking the MIG class.....I've never really liked MIG.... I prefer TIG.... and I like Stick a lot........ MIG... not so much.....HOWEVER....... tonight I was introduced to Pulsed MIG for the first time..... the instructor didn't actually know how to set the machine......... so he asked another [very good] instructor.......10 minutes later.... on the Lincoln 350P, setting 14 for .035 wire..... and I was off to the races......I can say publicly.......... that as of tonight...... Reply:I started using pulse a couple of years back and like it a lot better than without, when going back to a conventional machine...it's different to say the least....Mike

Reply:Yep when you set it right it welds great. But the problem is that poor penetration and porosity are often present. It has its range of usabilility. Very usable for thin aluminium to the point where you can use spray transfer. Also great for brazing with CuSi wire.

Less undercut, and mainly helps on crater control at the end of the weld. Never really used standard pulse with my C-300, and always went with the rapid arc. Sold that machine, and now just use quality dual-shield for most spray applications. Main point, there is always some work around for most things. Reply:Yeah, Rapid arc is pretty neat, like a f***in' caulk gun for steel.  A bit more spatter than standard pulse modes, though.Pulse MIG is good for steel in some ways- thinner sheet, out-of-position welds, minimizing spatter. No major advantage for steel thicker than 1/8" in most cases.Most welds done with pulse can be done with a standard MIG with 75/25 gas if the machine is dialed in properly. Pulse just makes it easier, especially on complex jobs where settings need to be changed often. Not a magic elixir, just another useful tool. JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
