Hi welding gurus .  I once saw a welder at a car-speed shop several years ago build weld bead on top of thin-walled aluminum intercooler pipe (~1.6mm aluminum tubing).  Although, I've had success with my EverLast 225LX machine, I'm having difficulty creating a tall weld-bead around the end of this thin-walled aluminum tubing.  Does anyone know how to do it without burning through the metal or penetrating too much?  (The weld on the upper right is the one I was trying to make tall, but had no luck)Machine: EverLast 225LXTungsten: 3/32 sharpened to a point (2% Lanthanated)Gas: 100% Argon @ ~15 cfhCup: #8 weld-craft cup with Gas LensHeatsink: 1/4" thick flat-bar of aluminum rests directly below the aluminum tubing
Reply:Are you trying to build up a surface to make a wear protection area.   It's all about how much filler you feed and having enough heat.   If you are burning through, you are probably too cold.  Go with a thicker rod like 1/8 or 5/32....   Terry introduced me to the magic of using larger filler rod. Hot and fast and jam your rod in.....  that sounds ummmm, yeah   Sent w/ Tapatalk using Swype, pls excuse typos now FreeLast edited by soutthpaw; 10-08-2013 at 05:03 AM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Jody, over at Welding Tricks and Tips . com had a video a while back about this very question.  He suggested that you drag the torch (instead of pushing) and add the filler while pulling back on the torch.  It worked for him, but I've never tried this technique.  You might check over there.

Reply:Southpaw you could always put it on my anvil and I could make it longer or wider for ya, but I can't do both. Your choice. Oh and just don't make eye contact with me.  Bud!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
