i have a miller mvp and have been running it on 220v   with the auto set on and .030 solid wire, but it seams that i have to set the voltage very low to weld thin metal and the dial does not correspond correctly to the metal thickness shown on the unit, now i have to do some exhaust work and what i want to know is if i run the machine with 110v will it weld the thinner metal better than using it on 220v, personally i dont see why it would make any diff when you can set amps at the dial, but iam also wondering if anybody else has had this problem, another thought i had is because i bought the welder from cyberweld because of the great price, do they sell units that do not pass all of millers quality control tests and get them at a reduced price, witch could be the reason of my concern, but i would think miller would never pass on a unit that does not pass all of there tests, thanks for any input
Reply:Cyberweld doesn't sell bad units Tell us exactly the parameters of you situation:Material sizeWire size ( this is the only thing we know so far .030)And where you have the dials set on the machineAre you using Auto-set?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:As mentioned above, .023 wire is better for exhaust work. A little experimentation will get the correct voltage and wire speed. By the way, I bought my Miller 252 through Cyberweld, a company with which I have no financial affiliation. They gave me an excellent deal, the unit was shipped with a terrific private carrier and the machine came exactly when the tracking number said that it would without so much as a scratch on the container. The driver even rolled it into my shop on a cart after using his lift gate to remove it carefully from his truck. The welder works perfectly. What's not to like? Based on my experience and everything else that I know about the two companies, I can state without fear of contradiction that neither Miller nor Cyberweld will sell substandard equipment. There's no money to be made doing that.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:Another vote for .023 wire for thin material.Heat is set with wire feed speed not voltage. Check your fire feed speed and voltage settings on the inside of the door and it should get you close.
Reply:I had the same experience with the auto set.I had to play with the metal thickness settings to get it right.I would say .023 best way to go.
Reply:thanks for the help, sorry about the question of substandard equipment i know that miller is a good co, but what i take from the good info is to use the .023, but i might try it using the manual wire feed setting, thanks for the info

Reply:ok thanks, its just that the last job i did i was welding .065 metal to 1/8" and 3/16"brackets, and in auto set, had to have it set as low as it would go to not burn thru on the thinner metal, this all could be because of my technique, only welding with mig for a year now, but thanks for the help, and i will start a new thread for the proper help i probably need
Reply:What Ed said on the manual settings and when working with two different thickness materials - especially if one is considerably thinner - it's best to focus the weld puddle on the thicker piece and let it "wash up" to and onto the thinner piece to help prevent burn thru.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
