It's probably already been discovered with as much knowledge and experience everyone here has but it was a revealing moment this morning for me when I discovered that touching the rod with the side of the tungsten strikes an arc when the rod happens to be resting on the base metal keeping the tungsten tip away from the base metal and puddle. I didn't know whether it was even worth mentioning when I knocked off and came it for NASCAR but I thought all of us beginners might benefit from all your experienced comment on it. It might not even be good for the machine.
Reply:No high frequency start on your rig? Here is a video Jody made, he does something similar about 7:20 into the video.http://welding-tv.com/2013/04/18/old...-with-a-twist/Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:No, I was just fooling around with one of my neighbor's old machines and I hadn't thought much about it until it just happened. Of course he knew about when he came out and I told him but he's not one much for the Internet so I thought I'd tell you what happened. I figured you all probably already knew. No, I'm still on borrowed machinery, except for my trusty old 180 Lincoln MIG, waiting to write the check for the Ranger I've decided (so far) to go with . I need the stick and mig and generator combo for the shop and tag-along trailer I'm working on out in the barn for the ranch. Then I'll start thinking about TIG in earnest so I'm just learning about 2T and 4T and pedals and finger controls and the like and things, discoveries, still amaze me. Terry "Shovelon" started me on TIG with his (I believe) Dynasty machine back at the last Weld-o-Rama and it was just great but, especially with family matters now, there's only so many hours in a day.

Reply:Thanks Dave. Just dropped you a PM. I saw Jody's video... and a huge pileup at Martinsville!!! Anyway, yeah, that's what happened with me but it was completely unexpected, one of those "Ohh!!!" moments. Now I see the benefit although I doubt spinning the stick like a drummer is in my immediate future! Funny thing; I keep taking video I "steal" off the internet over to Ron on my laptop or tablet and say "Hey, look at this!" and, of course after 60 years of doing it, it's always, "Oh yeah, you can do that." And then he walks over to one of his rigs and does something even more amazing. People who have talent and have taken the time to gain the experience it takes to be really good and who love sharing it with others are just the bet people in my book. I love the ability to teach film to kids coming up now because its what I know. You all taking the time to teach metal working to people like me, well, you're simply the best.
Reply:Hey Terry. Looks like me when you were teaching me last summer! OK, a bit younger but not much but I had just as much joy in my heart as this kid shows. And I fetched you an MGD. Age has its benefits!!!!
Reply:Good choice on the Ranger Jonathan! I'm so blue when it comes to spending the green on welding machines, but I honestly knew where my money was not so much better well spent, but more like what would satisfy me as far as what I want out of a machine. I've used both and it was a no brainer for me on the engine drives. I've talked with Miller reps at my lws and they know it as well. CEP was a big help on brushing me off, spinning me around, and giving be a good swift kick in the rearend as well! Thanks CEP, best azz kickin I ever got! You didn't have to where pointed cowboy boots tho  i'm still sore , but it was worth it LOL  I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Why DID you go with a Miller. I'm still open and still want to go with the best but I'm used to the feel of my 180 and like what it's done for me in learning to weld. So when I settled on a generator/welder combo, I figured a Ranger would have the same feel and performance.

Reply:Joyce, my wife as most of you know by now, said it best; "Places like your welding web are the thinking man's 'reality television'."
