I have a piece of 22ga(.030")wall tubing that gets inserted into a .100" wall piece of tubing and then welded. It is 304 to mild steel so I need to get some 309L rods. What size filler would you use for this? 1/16" looks like it is easier to find but I am afraid it may be a little big, .045" is out there but I really didn't want to buy a whole roll of mig wire. I really only need 1 or 2 rods for this project. Thanks.
Reply:I have some .045 if you want I will trim a couple of pieces down and mail it to you in a standard envelope. You may be able to find some small spools too?
Reply:If you use the lay wire technique, I bet 1/16 would be fine in that application. It's .062" as opposed to .045. Not much difference there. Just melt some, move puddle forward, repeat...TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Practice with .035 will make welding with .045 and 1/16 easier. Its like going from a Snooker table to a coin-op.Opus

Reply:weldingsupply.com will sell ya lots of small diameter filler rods for tig, down to about 0.030", in 1lb increments. Very handy to have instead of straightening out MIG rolls. Last time I ordered there, I went ahead and picked up a bunch of different stuff just in case stuff comes up; mild, 308L, 309L, SilBr ranging from 0.030" to 0.0625". 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig!
