After years of fiddling with my amperage control by walking back and forth to the machine to get it dialed in, I've decided to build one of these things. I purchased a 50 ohm 150W type "L" rheostat, (matches welder) and found an 8 inch square enclosure in the junk. I also located a decent sized bakelite knob, (for a gloved hand), an oversized double pole double throw switch fitting my faceplate slot currently covered by blanking plate on the welder, and am having a 300 degree rotation legend printed in percentage to become a faceplate on the remote adjustment box. I know how to connect it remotely etc. With the commercially available ones are the enclosures ventilated or does the unit not have enough current running through it to even be concerned? I ask this citing if you put a 60 watt lamp into an enclosure it's going to heat up a bit. Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:Thanks,I've never seen one of these things in use and am only going by the feasibility of the idea to make a job easier.Last edited by Slob; 03-28-2015 at 10:56 PM.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:I wouldn't think it would get to hot. I guess if heat was an issue they wouldn't attach a 100' cord to it.Operating Engineers Local 3Lincoln SA 200Victor TorchDewalt Grinder10 lbs SledgeWhat more do ya need!
Reply:If you look at most high wattage rheostat style control boxes you will see either louvers or holes punched in the sheet metal. I would venture to say some 3/8" holes drilled or punched into it should give it adequate ventilation. Other than that, I really wouldn't sweat it bro.IMHO of courseExpert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:Thanks guys, really appreciate the input.Having never seen one of these used, and knowing neither field excitation voltage, nor current values, leaves for a lot of open ended variables.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:I see most remotes for engine drives as sealed. You don't want water inside them. For a shop machine is a little different because you're out of the elements.

Reply:Is there a replacement brush for the LINCOLN rheo? Excuse the hijack Slob but I would forget to ask later.
