I was looking and wondering if anyone could tell me what year Lincoln switched the windings over from all copper to the copper/aluminum or all aluminum windings. My partner and I recently acquired 2 of these and have gotten conflicting years on when this switch was made. Thanks.
Reply:If no one answers just call Lincoln on Monday, (216)481-8100"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:If you are wondering about your own machines, copper windings are round on the outside, aluminum windings are octagonal on the outside.

Reply:I may be off base here but I seem to remember hearing something about the SA200's with the red face being copper, and the black face models being aluminum.-Dave

Reply:There is a lot of controversy around your question, if you haven't figured that out by now. General consensus says that everything up to 1971 is copper wound. In 1971 they began winding some machines with some aluminum. By 1975 most included some aluminum but few caused problems with "normal" welding before 1978. In 1978 there is a specific code number, which I don't recall, with problems that gave Lincoln and aluminum windings a bad rep. Mid 80's they started copper only again, but just with the Classics. They also cost more. Many welders had their machines rewound with copper too, so the only way to be sure is to have it checked by someone who knows what is what and where. Experts disagree on much of what I'm saying, and some contend the only aluminum in them is in the shunt coils. Have them checked out if you're really that worried about it. Or, just weld with them until something gives out and it has to be looked at, this is what I have done for years and I still don't know what mine is, other than a 1972.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
