This is a thread on the Chainsaw forum I'm a member of.http://www.arboristsite.com/communit...elders.276781/I'd like some opinions on this site about all the information (mostly misinformation) posted there. Please respond with your opinions here.  Ill post a link to this site after people opine. Thanks, and Happy Holidays to All.DRF255TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:When it comes down to welding something as thin as mufflers you could use mig or tig, but either way it must be clean. Tig would be my preference but it must be extremely clean to be worthwhile.
Reply:Posting info that is in direct opposition to, not only all the major welding machine manufacturers, but to those who manufacture the wire as well is beyond ballsy. I'd want to have something more concrete to go on before I start puttin my boots and pants on bakkards, and I don't care how many years of 'real life experience' somebody has doing it that way."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:One of the reasons I stopped visiting a few of the 4x4 sites. I was getting to the point I wished their welds would fail spectacularly and take them out of the gene pool, even if there were a few collateral casualties in the process..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:As with anything on the Internet, you gotta take a great deal of it with a grain of salt. Most of those guys are the types you can't tell them anything anyways. You're always gonna get the BS artists, Google cut and paste experts, and guys who know just enough to sound like an authority. Then, upon closer inspection you find they have little more than a nominal amount of knowledge which they heavily embellish in many cases. The guys who actually know what the hell they're talking about don't have to put on aires, or google tons of technical words and terms and regurgitate it to look impressive and sound knowledgeable.Their actions usually speak for themselves. That and the assistance they offer others. As far as moronic blowhards, I just ignore most of it. The only time I usually will step into the ring is if someone is jerking everyone else off and wasting the time of ppl trying to give them credible assistance. The guys talking most of the crap aren't really wasting anyone's time. You can choose not to read it. As far as information that may hurt someone, well did mom and dad tell you to not believe everything you hear and see on TV (the Internet these days)?Again, fact checking is a necessity as far as Internet forums go. Sure, I don't always get it right, but I don't blow smoke up anyone's a$$ or try to make myself look like I know more than I do either.I would say it would most likely be a waste of your time calling the ppl out Al. It looks like nobody knows what a carbon arc torch is anyways (not an ArcAir.)You could offer welding lessons tho IMHO of courseExpert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948

Reply:It was stated:Incidentally, Harris does not suggest polarity for their ER70S-6 wire that I run, like they do for their ER80S or some of their other wires.I actually don't think I could've been any nicer to any of the  guys or given them more ways out.  Alot of the info was just clearly discordant with accepted methods of welding. My only reason to post here was so that members there could get better info about their questions, not to prove I was right. So now the one biggest purveyor of bad info is has his panties all ruffled up about it.  I can't go use his equipment now and see "How it's done".  Like I need to go use an MM250 and a Syncro when I have an Arcmaster 300 for tig, had a dynasty. And mig off an XMT304 with a suitcase/30a Spooly/Optima.  Sounds like a snot nose little kid. Reply:I couldn't read it all. Are we talking about the same carbon arc torch I bought in the seventies billed as some sort of miracle? It was like having the heat of the sun with no way to aim it. No matter what I did the heat was an inch from where I wanted it. They said I could get rid of oxy acetylene, this was better. In retrospect, I wonder if it might work for heat straightening. I hung it from the ceiling three buildings ago. I guess it's still there.I feel very bad, everything I ever learned is wrong! I'm starting over, in the morning I'm going to weld up some chainsaw bars with SMAW aluminum using a carbon arc torch on a 110 volt MIG equipped with a CK water cooled #17 torch. I don't think polarity matters at all. By the way electrons have a positive charge. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Reply:I have a carbon arc spot welder attachment with copper coated carbon rods. From the sound of it from the arborists, it doesnt work so good. Heres a pic  of it for anyone who hasnt seen one. A stinger clamps on to it and has a trigger like on a pistol to make contact and arc. It came with my buzz box 20 or so years ago. Does anyone know what polarity for DC?Also for the arborist OP asking about carbon; if your reading this, I have a spare used VICTOR wh260c and ca250 torch handle and cutting attachment if your interested. Make me an offer. If anyone is interested in the torch and cutter in second pic, pm me.  I bought it from a friend a couple weeks ago with other stuf. He needed the money and has another complete spare set. He was going to sell me both sets gauges torches and one set of tanks for $600 but I dont need four setsBTW , the carbon arc thing is called a "KEL ARC SPOT GUN" made by Eastwood CO. Reply:The carbons on the two carbon type will not burn off equally on DC.I suppose if you were heating a nut or burning a rivet out the carbon would be negative.
Reply:The one in my pic is only for one carbon rod. I suppose I will try it DCEN first. Thanks for the input  Bluewelders.

Reply:TD he dude keeps saying "Try It!". Been there, done that. The heat required is generated in the arc. You need a reactive gas to produce an arc. Argon will just not cut  it. Never tried DCEN solid wire mig with argon and never will. I am sure many engineers and manufactureres have and found poor results.
