Good tig welder to practice with on pipe?

Hello everybody. I am currently a structural welder, and i mostly weld with flux core. Work has slown down, and i wanna take advantage my extra time to practice with tig. what do you guys think is a good tig welder to practice on pipe with?I was looking at the TWECO 211i. I have taken some tig classes, just need more practice.
Reply:Any one that works is a good place to start....It's not the machine it's the operator....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:^^^ I was going to say the same thing. It's kinda like asking what dirtbike will get me around the track or trails best lol. There's  alot guys on brand new bikes that suck and guys of old bikes that rock. So I don't really think it matters what machine that much
Reply:To some extent, yes that is correct. But at the same time, using the 211i is going to be much easier to learn on than say learning on an old buzz box with a scratch start. But I think the 211i is a great machine to start with. Reply:The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger is because I've read on here the multiprocess machines aren't that good
Reply:The 211 isn't a dynasty or any of the other high end dedicated tig units.  But for DC tig on steel and stainless steel it'll do just fine. DO NOT get the tig torch kit that is offered with the welder. It is bulky and cumbersome, resembling a 3lb hammer. Get a nice CK, Weldcraft or Weldtec torch and  a scc foot pedal. I've been using mine for almost a year, I Tig everything , even  when I should use mig or stick. I just can't resist the feel and control of Tig. Reply:You don't NEED anything more than a tombstone buzz box with an air cooled torch attached and a bottle of argon & regulator. What you do NEED is practice. That said, any machine you can afford with high frequency start and a foot pedal would be a great setup to learn with. And lots of scrap, filler, and PRACTICE.Capt. Reply:For carbon steel and stainless steel about any conatant current DC power supply will work fine.  Scratch start was the industry standard for years.  A foot pedal is not really needed but handy if you are welding in a shop.  They are not much use laying on your back welding boiler tubes.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:it all depends on your budget.......something is better than nothing...but try to get quality machines so you dont spend more time fixing the welder than time welding...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:In the industrial and construction world all your going to see is a good 3 phase dc welding power supply with scratch start.  You may get lucky and get on a machine that has lift start capabilities. Every torch you use will have a gas valve on it and most will be air/gas cooled.
