Hey Everyone,     Been using 6010 at school for about a week. Thought I would share some of my progress with this challenging rod. There are countless techniques to using this rod and I am still honing mine. After seeing 3-4 different instructors demonstrate there own techniques and the results that followed it has became clear that there is no one way to effectively use this rod. From personal experience I have noticed that using a very short whip makes for a pretty nice weld bead. After trying a longer whip distance I noticed that I cannot judge very well on the returning stroke of the whip motion and I would be left with deposits way to far apart or right on top of the previous. A shorter whip distance lets you keep your "eye on the ball" so to speak and allows me to determine my placement a whole lot better.Sure you have to move quicker as not to cut right through the base metal ( You can also use 6010 rod to cut Steel in a pinch) but if you have your heat set just right you'll do fine.So far this is my best executed vertical up stringer. I use the upside down "T" technique. the left to right motion is used to make sure each weld deposit you make touches both sides of the joint., depending on what diameter electrode.Exhibited below is a Vertical up weave with the 1/8 6010 Amperage set to the same as the vertical stringer, around 90 ish amps. Need some work on keeping my Joint related angle perpendicular the whole way up which explains the undercut to one side. My consistency could be a lot better too. But I can only get better from here, Right? Thanks for reading my 2 cents any comments or questions you know where to find me.Eastwood TIG 200NAPA 83-315 MIG
Reply:Ok first of all. 1st week your doing great.   Hang in there relax and it will start to work for you.  If your using a vertical whipping motion pause a half second longer.   This will allow the puddle to tie in better with both base metals and get rid of your undercut.   If its still getting undercut then turn it down just a few amps.   Its laying in flat.  That's really good welding for week 1.   Nice work.“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:The key when running vertical is to focus on getting a good tie in on the sides.  You can almost count when you have your machine set right 1001(watch the puddle fill all the way in on the side).  Then a fast stroke across the middle of the weld joint.  1002........  Repeat!   Dont worrry about filling in the middle very much.   Nice wash pass too!!!   It will becomes a rythm you dont have to think about after a while.    If that doesnt make sense let me know.“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair

Reply:I'm sure they already said this but make sure your rod is centered in the joint  not off to one side.     You can get a lopsided weld or too much heat building up on one plate.   Might make the weld puddle fall out or even undercut super deep.   Trust me I've done it a few times  lol“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
