Lookin' at this truck at a local carlot. It's a 1988 Ford Superduty windshield sticker is $3,295.00 but figure I can talk him a lil lower. First thing I'm gonna change if I get it is those wheel well humps in the bed and that rear tunnel that they have the fill neck run thru. Also gonna see if I can hook up the welder to the second fuel tank. What yall guys think?  Last edited by Anthony83; 01-27-2014 at 07:43 PM.93 Bobcat 225GMillerMatic 135HF Tig 91811
Reply:I got my 97 powerstroke for $5750 tax tag and title with only 171000mi on it.
Reply:guessing its a 460 in it. if its got a manual 5 spd I would say go for it. im no ford fan by any means but I think that to be a pretty beefy truck.on my buddies 89 though, he had pretty catastrophic rear-end failure. as in, driving down road and notices tires sticking out WAY further than they were supposed to. I don't know if that (10 1/4?) rear uses c-clips or how axles are retained, but it may be worth pulling the cover and looking for damaged bearings etc. I know his bearings got toasted inside and out, ring and pinion were still good thoughbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:the 10.25 is a full floating axle and is bolted to the hub. your buddies truck probably had a wheel bearing go out and toast the spindle and hub. here is what my welding rig is going to be.Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)

Reply:mine is a cab and chassis 4x4 dually, a lot heavier duty than a regular pick up dually, between a superduty and a regular f-350.Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)
Reply:IMO, i would get 4wd.  don't know what kinda welding your looking to get into, but right now the nat. gas is booming around here and i don't think i've seen a 2wd truck with a welder in the back.  my opinion.
Reply:Honestly, what's the body worth? I love old trucks, and those in particular, but 3300 for a truck like that is a lot around here. But if it's as clean as it looks, and runs great, it may be worth it.Also, is it gas? Would you prefer to stick with diesel on a welding rig? Because pre-power stroke fords are cheap as can be, and very reliable.IW Local 580 NY, NY
Reply:Make sure that tranny goes into reverse good. Some of the zf trannys were iffy during that time. I have one. $2800 top dollar. Reply:If I'm not mistaken that truck will have a Dana 80, make sure it doesn't have excessive lash or a bad pinion bearing. Lots of $$ to repair if its to far gone.
Reply:I believe the 87-96 had the sterling 10.25 rear axles. I know at least the 91-96 doLincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)

Reply:Good looking older truck and a way simpler to repair then the newer Triton or Powerstrokes.  And, yes they have the 'floater' rear axles, not c-clips.
