Hey guys,I'm a little stuck at the moment a customer wants me to make him up 2 pairs of swing barriers for two openings 13m wide I was going to make it in two sides with 100x100x5 box section uprights and 80x80x3 for the barrier bits but here lays the problem the guy doesn't want wheels on the end of the barrier which I'm sure it needs to support the weight at the ends. Can anyone help me with a design that could support itself over a 6.5m span??Help would be great!!Heres one I put on my one shop it's 5m wide.
Reply:Oh yeah he also doesn't want a post in the center like my own which would help support it a bit.
Reply:Look in to some heavy duty hinges made for the application or a counterweight setup.
Reply:If you can make it taller than the one in the photo, you could run the bottom diagonal out further towards the opposite end. That would help give it more support for the longer span. Just make sure the  pivot post it far enough into the ground to give proper support. You could run the diagonal down from the top instead, if the horizontal piece needs to be at that height.
Reply:Typical way to support a long cantilevered arm is some sort of triangle. If you make the pivot post taller you can use either a cable or rigid member to act as your tension member to help support a long cantilever vs relying on the horizontal materials stiffness to support itself.2nd option is to form some sort of "truss". This allows you to use thinner lighter materials and yet have the height needed for stiffness over the long span. The real question is if the client will be happy with the look of either of these options...No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Any thoughs on using a spindle setup for the pivot instead of hinges?  In my mind, it would give a stronger pivot point. As far as the actual swing arm, I would think a truss beam would be stronger for the span.As far as the center post, put in some way for the two pieces of gate to attach and push against each other when closed. This will make it act more like a beam supported at both ends than cantilever.
