I built a welding table a year ago, as I was just starting this process. It turned out to be a wonderful opportunity of learning the limits of Harbor Freight. I purchased casters there that were rated for the weight needed. Within a month, bearings were rolling across the garage floor. None of the local stores had casters that would suffice. So I left it the table in place resting on the all thread supported feet. Yesterday the cable guy visited and needed access to a service box behind the table. Good motivation for me to get back on this project. I need some heavy duty casters for moving a big table. Where would you shop?Another question. This is for use in my garage where the floor is smooth. I do a lot of grinding and cutting and wondered if the rubber and skateboard wheel tread material picks up the trimmings. Would you recommend steel wheels?
Reply:You can find good casters on line at places like MSC, Graingers, Mc Master Carr and so on. I get a lot of mine from a surplus place in Jersey..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I used these on my lathe table, a little expensive but you get what you pay for.http://www.castersupply.com/NAV/leveling_casters.htm
Reply:Look for those leveling casters on ebay I found some that were cheaper there than thru the store.Millermatic 211Dewalt 14" ChopsawDewalt 4 1/2" GrinderCraftsman
Reply:http://www.castercity.com/eshop/10Ex...nTo=../cm9.htmThey also have them with brakes, plus they offer weld on caster mounting plates to match.I put these on my welding table, my welding cart and several other heavy items...they work flawlessly even on super dirty floor.Get the larger ones to make it easy to roll over crap..all of mine are 5"
Reply:all good options. Think I got some of my last ones from Enco. If you want good wheels you got to pay.
Reply:I'm surprised that HF has no steel wheels, outr Canadian equivalent store has lots of them. How about Northern ?Try Tractor Supply, TSCThey have lots of steel wheels. Also go up to the largest ones possible, the bigger the wheels, the higher the weight rating and the easier to roll.I don't use the weight ratings at par, I apply a safety factor and make sure I go double, triple whatever.

Reply:I just went through this same issue and did the research and shopped for a long time. I have these in 5 inch sitting on my desk right now for my upcoming welding table build. Best price and for quality I could find. The 6 inch are rate for 1200 lbs.1050 lb swivel casters with total lockhttp://www.amazon.com/Wagner-Total-L...r+plate+caster1050 lb fixed casters. (notice the 5 inch is so much cheaper? must be a screw up, but I got mine at that price.) The picture showed it in black, but it looks like the swivel caster above.http://www.amazon.com/Wagner-Polyure...ter+fixed+1050I wanted at least 2 casters with total lock (swivel lock and brake) since I will be moving this table every time I want to use it. the garage is packed and arranged pretty tight. I needed larger casters to be able to roll the heavy beast out the door when necessary for fumes.I'd say to just sweep the floor when you want to move it. If the table is real heavy, a matchstick might be all that is necessary to stop it in it's tracks. Must be hell on the shoes.best thing about these casters is they are not make in China. Product of Canada.Last edited by Housedad; 01-13-2014 at 03:35 PM.Victor Oxy weld/cut Setup Meco Midget Torch outfitEverlast 2016 250EX & Power Cool W300Lincoln Power mig 210MP w/amptrol and Spool GunEverlast Powerarc 200 Hypertherm Powermax 45Bandsaw, Lathe, grinders, press, Bridgeport, etc.
Reply:It helps to have your city listed so people like me can better make suggestions. If you are in a big city, there are stores that sell strictly casters for every application. Just drive down and pick them up. Grainger and places like that would be my next to last choice do to their high price and lack of selection. Go to your local caster store. google it.
Reply:Call. A company called rayfo they build dumpsters. Tell them you need wheels for a 2 yrd dumpster. Dumpster casters are super hd have grease able bearings and roll ever so nice

Reply:I've had the 4" rubber coated casters from Lowes on my welding tables for years. They are the biggest and heaviest rating caster and fixed wheel you can buy there and are about $20 each. I have no complaints about them. Get as big a wheel as you can find, bigger wheels are easier to roll..

Reply:The largest phenolic or steel casters you can find or afford. Polyurathene blow, they don't last with what I do. Rubber and plastice pick up crap. I used a some phenolic on my old Bobcat cart and a gantry crane. They worked very well and last but I will go with steel for a new/rebuild table I'm gonna start soon.Idealarc 250AC 225SVictor OA-older made in USA stuff. And a crap ton of other stuff.
Reply:StinkydadWhen you put wheels on a table it becomes a cart.Aside from rigidity, the next reason to build tablesheavy is so they don't move. Chasing your work is wasted effort. You should be able to find a source of good casterslisted under Material Handling.Opus

Reply:Northern tool had some steel casters when I was there last week. You can go to www.northerntool.com to look.
Reply:Hi there,Those self leveling casters listed below are the greatest!!!! I have them on my welding table, I can level my table with the slope of the floor.....yes kinda pricy but they do work!!!!! AND you have to ratchet each one of them for up and down.....I weighed that against hydraulic levelers and such.....not sorry I went that way.Good luck...Miller Big Blue Air PakMiller 350P, Python GunHyperthermsSpool gunsMetabo GrindersWe "dooit" as a family...."a family that sleds together stays together"......from sleddin to campin to 4 wheelin to workin.....gotta enjoy life somewhere!
Reply:Wedooit and a1998z3, I am intrigued by the self-leveling casters. I have looked around and can't find a clear demonstration or video of how they work. Can you help me out?Otherwise, I am leaning toward leaving my table on its leveling feet and setting up wheels that lower to the ground and lift the table on very rare occasions I would move it.
Reply:We found about a dozen casters at a scrap yard. They were 4 inch and 6 inch casters with swivels and locks. We paid 30 cents a pound for them. You might check some local scrap yards.
Reply:I have good success with TRIOPINES out of Dallas I would use steel or phenolic and as large a wheel as you can afford

Reply:I have used and recommended Hand Trucks and Casters, Inc. out of Kansas City, MO several times. Very good prices, selection, service, and fast / free shipping a lot of times. They have a website as well as an ebay page. Seems like stuff might be a little cheaper or better deal on full sets and shipping on their ebay page. Enjoy.Website:http://www.casters-sales.com/servlet/StoreFrontEbay:http://stores.ebay.com/Hand-Trucks-C...=p4634.c0.m322 |
