Ok gang - I have a question on welding copper sheet.  I have aprox. 20 gauge copper sheet that I want to weld.  Not solder or silfloss but I need to weld it.  It is for an art project that will have to endure heat that would remelt the solder so welding it needs to be.  I do not want to braze it either.  I do not have a tig so it will be oxy/fuel welded.  Any thoughts or tips to help me on this one?  I hope everyone had a good and safe Thanksgiving.CharlieCharlie
Reply:Copper to copper..... using copper wire as a filler I'd guess. You better talk to tinmantech or Kevin Caron about fluxingBubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)

Reply:Thanks Burpee and DSW for the reply.  I was thinking I could use possibly either parent material or maybe electrical wire as a filler.  But I am wondering if I would need to use a backing as a heat sink on the butt weld.  I have read to use very good ventilation.  I am going to try a test run this weekend and was hoping for some incite.CharlieCharlie
Reply:Homedistiller.org has a lot of info on working with copper.  Those guys over there can make copper a work of art.   Working with copper making stills in making a big comeback all across the world.
Reply:Can't be done without flux.  And pretty nasty flux too.  Why not use 0% silver silphos?
Reply:What type of flux?  I am going to try to enamel it with glass fusing and the melt point of the glass is near the silphos.  This will be used in a fountain and needs to be water tight.CharlieCharlie
Reply:Talks about special deoxidized filler and their flux. Not sure what's in their flux. http://www.tinmantech.com/html/copper_index.php"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:I have welded copper several times using 12 ga electrical wire as the rod.  I just tig it like you would steel.  It absorbs heat like crazy, but once you get it going it welds just fine.  If you insist on doing a gas weld, it probably would need an acid based flux to get good cleaning action.  I know my oxy/acet welded joints would not look as good as my tigged joints.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:Standard de-ox copper filler and an appropriate copper welding flux are in order. Fluxes can be had from aufhauser, TM technologies, and ESAB off the top of my head. Bit of a learning curve but its not bad. TM technologies is probably the best bet for less than industrial quantities of the material.
Reply:Thank you for the reply.  I take it I can get the de-ox filler from local welding supply.  I know of TM and will order some flux from him.Thank youCharlieCharlie
