I am going to be drilling and taping holes in 1 1/2" steel.  I have a mag drill and some annular cutters.  I don't want to go more than 1" into it, anyone have a good way to remove the plug from a blind hole?  I think that is the term for the hole?  I may be able to get a regular chuck for my mag drill, but the annular cutters work so well.  Thanks
Reply:Might be easier to drill the entire hole, tap it, then weld a plug in the bottom of the hole from the under surface.
Reply:I am doing the opposite, I am drilling the underside of my new benches.  I thought of doing that, it may be my best option.
Reply:How big are the holes?        Sincerely,             William McCormick
Reply:would an endmill work.
Reply:Drilling into a 30" x 10' x 1 1/2" piece of plate.  Whatever I do has to be brought to the piece of steel.  I would like to drill probably drill 3/4" holes.  Can an endmill be used in a mag drill?
Reply:They make drill bits for some of them. I do not know what they cost though. http://www.hougen.com/accessories/ac...x.html#tapping       Sincerely,             William McCormick
Reply:i would just use a drill bit.  use a bunch of oil and step the hole up in stages as you get to final diameter.  drill bits are cheap when you consider the rest of the options and time involved.
Reply:Center punch each hole and drill a pilot hole to depth and size for a piloted  counterbore the size of the id. of the annular cutter or larger. Then drill with the annular, then follow the pilot hole with the counterbore. The pilot hole will have to be deeper than the finished hole by the length of the pilot.tractor,loader.dozer,backhoe,and all the tools to keep em movin

Reply:A counterbore is a larger hole with a face in a hole. If the head of a capscrew (bolt) sits down in a pocket, that pocket is a "counterbore".You can also buy twist drills with 135° or 150° included angle which leave a very shallow angle at the bottom of the hole.Matt
