I started welding in school and we took our 1G test 1/8 7018 Excalibur rods. Plates were 3/8x4x8 with a 30 degree bevel. hows it look?Last edited by jagfab2012; 02-02-2014 at 07:05 PM.Reason: spelling error
Reply:Looks Good, I would have over lapped the previous bead a wee bit more but thats my style... Did they pass the Pigment Dye test? Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a persons ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
Reply:That seems strange, 4-pass cap on 3/8 plate, with 30-degree bevel. Do you get to prep your own coupons?Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:His root opening looks close to 3/16" that would explain the 4 pass hat.
Reply:Looks okay to me but you need to really watch that gap right on the edge of your bevels attached to your backing strip. It's pretty easy for slag to get caught in there and mess up a coupon... Been there done that. I see you bandsaw'd the coupons... bandsaw your bevels next time.
Reply:my root opening was 1/4. and yes we got to prep our own plates. i was just doing what the instructor told me to do. its a DOT bridge certification. i'm just a sophomore so this was just for practice, doesnt amount to anything. i can just say i done it.
Reply:it would have been easier to have bandsaw'd the bevels but we cut them with a track torch. which wasn't very accurate and took a lot of grinding. and i was tacking the plates to the backing strap i took a c-clamp to make sure there wasnt a gap. it does kinda look like it in the picture.
Reply:If you are using a grinder you need to practice more with the track torch. At our school I can cut a clean bevel and the only grinding I have to do is for the landing. Get with your instructor and learn to use it properly. Of course you could have a crappy set up and clogged tips too. Either way good luck with your schooling. |
