I found a used Lincoln 256 for $1800 (which seems like a decent deal nowadays in Canada).Just about to go pick it up but I dont think my garage circuits will handle it.My detached garage is on a 30 amp breaker from the main panel in the house. Anyone know if I'll still be able to run the 256 or any other 250 series?
Reply:RTFM, which you can get online at Lincoln's website.Or call Lincoln's Tech/Help line.Short answer, not really.Manual says the machine is supposed to be on a 60 amp breaker (at 230V) and draws 44 amps at 230 V at "rated" output power of 200 amps (with the aux 115V machine outlet at 15 amps) and 52 amps at 230V input and 250 amps output power (for the 208/230V model, the 230/460/575V model is listed as slightly more 'efficient' at only 41 amps input power at 230V at 200 amps output, might also be because it doesn't have the 115V aux outlet).Maybe if you run at a lower output power and don't have anything plugged into the machine's 115V aux outlet, you might be able to use the machine without tripping the breaker. But I don't know just how big of an inrush current surge that machine will pull when you first turn it on and the machine's transformer 'powers up'.The 250-class machines will not be able to run at full or at 'rated 'output power on a 30 amp breaker. The 200-210 class machines might be able to, although they usually seem to call for a 40 amp breaker. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Okay, Thanks for confirming what I had thought.
Reply:The manual says 52 Amps at 250A output, 44A at 200A out (on 230 V). 60A breaker recommended.Oops, slow on the reply ... Reply:No worries, I read the manual but was hoping for some miracle of an answer.

Reply:Yes they do. Plus my 220 outlet runs either my 60 gal twin cylinder compressor or my AC 225 buzzbox.May just try a MM211.Don't feel like running 6 gauge to the garage.
Reply:Well my buddy (certified electrician) is going to run a 3 gauge line from my house to the garage. Very excited for this hookup.
