I have a pretty good set of tools both at work and at home. I would like to see some of your most used and handy lay out tools.thermal arc mst400, va4000 feeder, lincoln 175 min, victor torches, miller s32p feeder, air arc k4000 for work.
Reply:98" alum. ruler, length of rope and soap stone. I like to keep it simple!200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:Nothing like that. I have a good cheap set of transfer punches only up to inch. The magnetic burning guide makes my torch cutting easier. Torpedo levels and framing triangles are used quite a bit.thermal arc mst400, va4000 feeder, lincoln 175 min, victor torches, miller s32p feeder, air arc k4000 for work.
Reply:How 'bout giving us a gander at the magnetic guide?Good Luck
Reply:I got some junk out yesterday and when I saw the condition of some of this I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning, everything seemed filthy. Midwest summers don't help the finish on some of these either.I don't have a favorite except for maybe a tape and framing square. Probably the most used are the combo machinist squares, dividers, hermaphrodites and hook scales. If you work with or modify machinery in place you can end up with a lot of junk over time. The little blue snake looking thing (2nd pic bottom) is a drafting tool. Levels, plumb bobs and squares are handy as is music wire. I have setups to use the verniers as scribers also.Matt Attached Images
Reply:Acculine laser level.  One of the best things I bought for the race car.
Reply:Calipers (cheapies get used as precision scribes, trammels, and so on), framing and tri squares, automatic center punches, and carbide scribes are at the top of the list.I make a lot of my own for special jobs (layout tools and measuring tools... 24" trammel from a $8 harbor fright aluminum caliper and a couple tungstens, special hook rules from the $0.99 steel 6" rules, transfer and lining punches for slotted out holes from their chisels, and so on) as needed, and sometimes keep them, sometimes recycle. I pretty much consider harbor fright as a place to get kits to make tools.
Reply:I recognize everything but that.tractor,loader.dozer,backhoe,and all the tools to keep em movin
Reply:Matt_Maguire  is hereby crowned the Layout King!  It's gonna take a serious siege to topple his reign. He's even got the hermaphrodites in his arsenal!I wonder about a few of his pictured pieces:Attachment 51998Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:45 PM.
Reply:You could open a tool museum with all that, Matt!  Wow! What's the big arch thing in the last pic?200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:A, are toolmakers buttons in a box of gage block holders (they are put in place with small screw and adjusted, then locked. The part is then taken to a machine where the button or buttons are indicated for proper placement of a machined feature).B, is a toolmakers square (goes back to the days of sawing and filing punches and dies).C, is a little Starret square headD, is a little right angle scale clampE, is a clamp and scale for close layout or inspection on rounded (shaft) surface.I'll take better pictures for study, this morning I dragged some junk out for a magnetic circle cutter on the cheap but didn't take the camera...Matt

I have a height gauge & the basic measurement stuff. Starrett combo squares to 24", etc.You got the KING haul on the layout stuff tho. Again, real slick Matt. I like my machinist's squares...All the way up to 24"

Reply:Great looking set there Matt. I've got some of it but not all and I'm not showing mine it's just to sad to look at that box right much less take a pic of it.  However here's a shot of my long straight edge. It's another from my former employer. They made it and then it was planed at another shop years ago. Don't ask me how accurate it is but I know it's the straightest thing that long I've got in the shop.   Next are a couple of shots of my magnetic circle cutter for my plasma. The original magnet is in the bottom of the drawer. I used old hard drive magnets for it. They worked fairly well for a while but it was hard to keep them glued to the base. I finally got them to hot one time and ordered the current magnet from McMaster Carr. It's worked super well since. As you can see in the drawer I've got several different length rods for versatility. The hardest part is getting it set just right for the hole or disk size. Reply:I'm in serious doo-doo here!My 1200sq ft castle is under siege by 3 worthy kings!Scouts report the Irish army has fashioned a fine straightedge weapon that is lightweight, and also appears to be able to make magnetic circle cutting guides with half the steps of my vision!Scouts report the 7A749 army bristles with impressive Squares and an Index miller, they also have knowledge of the mighty Hydrotel (a fearsome machine, able to cut wide swaths through any army).Scouts report denrep's army has a mystical weapon that looks effective around projections, and brings a very large arsenal, appearing capable in any type of battle! Further rumors indicate this army is also fast with the mighty ejector torch! This looks bad, REAL BAD for the home team folks...Matt
Reply:I don't have an answer for the Irish straightedge (light and strong). All I can muster is, wire, lock wire pliers and weights...(send for the lasers)!I also have no answer to the magnetic circle cutter made with so few parts either. In tribute I offer  a small surface gage to quickly place similar damaged and repaired parts. (below).Matt Attached Images
Reply:I have no ready answer for 7A749's larger squares  for fine vice work.In tribute I offer 2 matching angle plates which were machined and keyed as a pair. They are not very portable though... (below)The back faces are also flycut to clamp motor bell faces for quick bore repair.Matt Attached Images
Reply:I also have no match for denrep's sturdy mystery tool.In tribute perhaps, a solution for working around projections can be made using 2 right angle clamps with one combo square in the junk below.I'll have to sue for peace I think...Matt Attached Images
Reply:Boy, you guy's must do some accurate stuff with all that gear!!!!! Most of the stuff I do has little need for more than a eighth inch of accuracyClose enough for horse shoes and hand grenades, as they say. 200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
