Reply:There's usually nothing cheap about welding alum. Usually by the time you buy the correct equipment and spend the time and money for materials to really learn how to weld alum, not to mention the materials for the project itself, it will be probably cheaper to just buy one.Alum welds completely different than steel, and most people have a tough time learning to weld alum and do a decent job because of this. You don't mention what sort of equipment you have. Even though most little 110v migs will say they weld alum, don't expect to have much luck if thats what you have and are planning to use. I believe most of the guys here who build the towers use tig. That would be my choice for this sort of project. I've never had much luck with small round alum tube and my spoolgun..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I've been welding scrap tubing already. I've only ever welding aluminum, so I guess I'm "lucky" in that I don't know how easy steel is. I have a 200amp tig welder and argon gas (I may try a helium miz at some point, but this is working for me so far). Anodized is even trickier.. but I'll be ok.Still just looking for a way to bow the top.. someone said it's called coping not crowning.. so I'll search for that.
Reply:You can bow the top tube easily enough in a roller. Most ornamental iron shops have a roller and can roll tube for you if you don't have that machine yourself. This is called rolling, or bendingCoping is mitering the end of the tube with a hole saw or other method so it fits tight around the shape of an adjoining tube, in order to make the welded joint fit up evenly.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op |
