Hey all-What are you guys using where a 4" angle grinder wont fit?We dont have an air supply good enough to run an air die grinder and I dont know if my dremel rotary saw has enough powerThanks,Andrew
Reply:What are you trying to do, grind, cut, clean?I've used a Dremel with a crabide burr to chase cracks and V out areas I can't get into with a grinder. It's hard on the dremel, but works when I don't have the die grinder available..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I'm lucky enough to have an electric die grinder. It ain't a cheap one and I'm fortunate to have it. There should be some lower priced ones out there tho. It can be a real life saver sometimes. Well worth it if you can come up with one you can afford."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:I bought a Rotozip for about $120.  Unlike the Dremel, it had a 3/8" collet.  Only thing I can add to this post.Good luck
Reply:I use a Milwaukee straight die grinder.  Works good but it would be nice if it was available in angle style too.   I have air die grinders in straight and angled but electric is more convenient for me to use.One time I saw a really cool small angle grinder from Proxxon at the local Tool Depot shop.  One day I finally decided to go down there and buy it.  Got there and the place was darn near deserted, they were going out of business.  They'd already sold all the Proxxon tools, so I couldn't buy it that day and haven't investigated finding another place to buy it.  It seemed like a really cool thing though.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Meant to say 1/4" collet
Reply:If you need to grind your welds on the inside corners then try practicing just on inside corners.  Maybe position yourself where you can do the inside corners in one pass without any starts and stops.  When I get close to a corner I switch to a new rod that way I avoid the starts and stops and just have to deal with clean the weld.  If you need to clean then maybe a cup brush on a drill will work and if you need to remove dingleberries, then a cold chisel and hammer will work.
Reply:try welding in tight places with rod that doesnt throw much spatter. 6013    7014.
Reply:Does somebody make a small electric needle scaler? Something less than 10 lbs would be nice.    No bigger than needed for about 5 needles would be perfect.  Make it (in America) and I'd buy it in a flash."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Hi all, I used to use a small variable speed wood router with a 1/4" shanked, carbide bit on it. It is 650 watt. Not an ideal solution and I would not recommend it to others. I had to be very carefully with it and not run it at full speed as it was potentially very dangerous, as sometimes the bit can grab and can kick up and hit another edge or surface, usually destroying or bending the shank on the bit, when it kicks it will happen in a flash and you cannot stop it from kicking up even holding it with two hands. But as the working end was away from my hands it gave me  a small safety margin. I only used it as a last resort and so long as I didn't rush the grind it did a good job. A safer option was a grinding stone attached instead of the carbide bit as I haven't had one of those grab, but the carbide bit was faster. I also positioned myself in such a way so that if I had to drop it it wouldn't hit any part of me even by bouncing around.Again I stress, it is not something I would recommend to anyone.A better alternative which I now use is an air die grinder.Miller Auto Invision 456 + S-62 wire feederC6240B1 Gap bed lathe16 ft3 air compressor16 speed pedestal drillHafco BS-912 Bandsaw
Reply:Thanks for all of your replies!I have a tig welder and am trying to repair shovels on my dad's farm that have split at the center of the spade and with the curvature of the metal I cannot get a 4" flat wheel in there- I may be able to force a flapper disc to contour.  They are rusty and sometimes painted so I have to clean them to prep them for welding.  This is more of a general question though as I am going to have to figure this out sooner or later because my next project is a cattle feeder that is tube frame and is going to require cutting sections out and new tubing to be added in lots of close corners.I have the dremel advantage- basically the same thing as the rotozip before it came out...  I will try that first and if doesn't work I will look at the electric die grinders...That dynafile is not cheap but looks really cool! How much are the abrasives as I assume they are proprietary?BTW what do you guys do if for some reason you have to grind and then weld again afterwards as far as cleaning procedure? I used to use brake cleaner and a cloth but my welding instructor told me that it would make phosgene gas (chemical warfare) when I welded? Thanks,AndrewLast edited by hpfiend; 07-06-2010 at 10:45 AM.

Reply:This is a great little grinder to get in tight places but is not real powerful, although a lot more than a Dremel. Click on Micromot tools. It's the long neck grinder.http://www.proxxon.com/us/Last edited by Bob; 07-06-2010 at 08:40 PM.
Reply:These arent exactly use em for 8 hours a day tools but they didnt break the bank. The Black and Decker power file.  Good enough for my occassional use.  Still see belts around for em.  Speed control.Makita straight die grinder.  The long nose one.  Disadvantage, no speed control.  Have both 1/4 inch and 6mm collets.  At around 20000 rpm I recon this last bit is kinda important.Personally I wouldnt put my Dremel thru heavy grinding tasks.
Reply:get an electric die grinder with variable speed. the single speed ones are designed for stones and run too fast for carbide bits. the money you spend on replacing bent and chipped carbides will outweigh the price of a variable speed die grinder pretty quick (as I found out the hard way).

Reply:Milwaukee has a band file that's cheaper than the dyna.  I bought one a few years ago for my dad.  It doesn't get used every day, but when it gets used there isn't any other tool that will do the job.  Seams to be well built.http://www.amazon.com/Milwaukee-6101.../dp/B00004TI11Miller 250x & Lincoln V205-TSmith Oxy-Prop torch
