so i finally got a new torch, 150amp air cooled version, with 25ft cable and with a valve so i could use it on my old lincoln, and also be able to use it on a newer machine. I tried it out on some 4in pipe, thats a root pass with 3/32 red band, 3/32 S-2 filler, 3/32 gap, i think about 95-100 amps, dont remember on that for sure. i used my ol ideal arc 250 ac dc. also using a gas lens and an 8 cup. 17cfh. the pics are of the torch with pure tungsten that i welded that alum frame for a bench, pictures of that have been posted. first pic is the root pass, second is the backside i think after i put in the hot pass, was checking for suck back. finally the third pass is some cup walking weave pattern. take into account this is only the first time i have attempted to tig on pipe. i have never been able to successfully walk the cup with my other 17 torch as its pretty bulky (TA brand with button and valve). so critique judge whatever tell me where my weld can improve. im still pretty new to tig, just a hobbyist layin down beads on my week off from work. i know theres a couple spots on the backside i think that is a tack/tie in that i need to work on getting that right.Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:Looks really good for your first time tigging pipe. There are a few spots that could be better but that will come with practice. Next time try to take pictures of all sides of the pipe so we can see what positions you need to work on. (12-3-6-9) Its hard to tell from the pictures but I think you need to clean the steel a little better, if it looks like its boiling near the edge of weld grind more. At the end of the weld you need to work on snapping out of the weld so that it doesn't leave a crater. All you do is speed up travel until the puddle dries up then go up the bevel and snap out.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:K thanks. Yeah I just pulled the torch out and put back over the weld to shield while it was still hot....the pics were from 9-12 not sure the root as thats the only one I did all out...and I didnt clean the edges of the outside because I didnt plan on welding out to a cap. Just wanted to practice a weave and cup walking. But I did clean the bevels nicely with a flapper and hit the inside with a stone but left it pretty crude as i dont have alot of mro supplies to get inside pipes mostly just have grinding wheels and stuff the wont fit insideI have the torch on my idealarc because I dont have a dinse connector to hook it up to my inverter which then I could eliminate the crater.....I plan to soon upgrade my welder...bout a month or so might get a sync 210 or a 186 or a dynasty not sure how much money I want to spendMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:Yo bud sorry about your PM. Ill write you back after work on the home computer and not my phone. Sorry about that, forgot. I had two other people ask me the same question last week and yours got lost in the shuffle.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Couple things that help me walk the cup: I grind a bevel on my cups. Take a 80-grit sanding pad to the bevel on the pipe, and a mil file to the outside edge of the bevel. I also take a roto-burr to the inside of the pipe to clean. Reply:I didnt wanna use my burrs on that pipe cause I was using em on alum for that bench I made so I didtwant any cross pollination hahaIts all good mike thanks for remembering thoughVery interesting about the cup......that I will try does it help with the every once in awhile it kinda gets stuck if ya know what I meanMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:Yup it helps a lot with the cup getting stuck. So does the 80-grit finish, and the mil file on the outside of the bevel.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:i chucked up a brand new little maybe 1/2in round stone in my die grinder and idk maybe i was impatient and it didnt clean fast enough like a grinding wheel on the angle grinder. haha i was bein a little lazy as far as prep, i couldnt wait to use my new torch......i had been eyeballing it at the LWS for months.....finally went and got it and also picked up a inert gas quick connect. i LOVE that little thing so easy for cleanin up just disconnect it and roll up the 25ft lead....Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
