Been stick welding a week now..Thought I'd give it a try Vertical up using.....Everlast 160sth...1" plate (from junkyard) 1/8 Hobart rods? (from junkyard also) at least they were in Hobart box...Bounced around between 100 & 135 amps till they started looking good(115amps) to my NEWBIE A** anyway..lol Using a rickety/wobbly jack type stand...(sometimes you gotta chase it around when it starts wobblin) Hopin the beads will look nicer when I can start doin this from a stable platform...This freehandin kinda sucks(I'm OLD,WORE OUT & SHAKE way more at 57 than I did at 27..LMAO...ANYWAY...Some advice from REAL welderes would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance guys Attached Images
Reply:Mud dobber,I believe you are a little reckless with the truth. This ain't your first rodeo and those weren't some rusty old 7018's the flux is falling off of.Another thing I haven't figured out is how that rickety old fixture kept those 1" plates from turning into a L with that much heat down the center.LOLHowever you really did it, it looks good.

Reply:For some one just starting out not bad. However I'd want to see the stringers tied in better to the sides of the plate myself. Consistency needs work and your tie ins need to be better. In the pict of the 2nd side by side pass, pict #3, the bead is too much over the 1st one and not close enough to the wall. You weave needs work. From the middle up to 3/4 of the way to the top it's fair. Tighten up the motions more though. The lower section you need to wash into the walls more. I see some porosity it looks like in your restarts. We have students do stringers all the way out until the final cap..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
